Question of the Week ~ Mystery Story?

Jun 26th, 2008 | By | Category: Question of the Week

This week we have a questions that might just make you think harder than any other question we have asked before!  While Stephenie Meyer was in Germany on her book tour, she mentioned that Breaking Dawn correlates to two stories.  One story she confirmed was A Midsummer Night’s Dream, but the second remains a mystery!

What do YOU think the second story that Breaking Dawn correlates with is?  And, how do you think that story will play out in Breaking Dawn?

  1. Corey says:

Like others on here, I really do think the best candidate for that other book BD is supposed to be based on is JANE EYRE. It’s in similar company as the other classics she’s homaged in the series and as others have already mentioned, there are already a few striking similarities between JE and the “Twilight” series. There’s even a point, when Jane is separated from Rochester, Jane hears his voice, not unlike how Bella had been hearing Edward’s voice in NM. The inequality Jane sees between herself and Rochester is also a major factor in Jane’s character, ditto Bella with Edward. Bridging the gap between them, Jane inherited a large sum of money from her dead uncle. I suspect bridging the gap between Bella and Edward, Bella’s equivalent of “inheritance from her dead uncle” will be in the form of her turning into a vampire. Like Rochester knew he shouldn’t have pursued Jane because he was carrying a dark secret (he was already married), but he did it anyway. Edward knew he shouldn’t have pursued Bella also because he was carrying a dark secret (he’s a vampire), but he did it anyway.

I don’t think Edward had some secret relationship with Tanya akin to Rochester’s secret wife hidden in his attic or anything. I tend to trust Stephenie when she says Bella is Edward’s first and only love, first everything. Keep in mind, Rochester also had an admirer in Blanche Ingram that Rochester didn’t care at all about, but he did use her to make Jane jealous. I’m thinking Tanya may be Edward’s Blanche (although it would be really crappy of him trying to use Tanya to make Bella jealous, as insecure as Bella already is. I hope that doesn’t happen).

Also, like others here, I unfortunately think Bella/Edward’s wedding will be interrupted like Jane/Rochester’s had been, however, not necessarily for the same reasons. I could totally see the Volturi crashing the wedding. Maybe like I’ve read in many ‘a fanfic and they’re demanding Bella either come with them, turn right now or die at about the most inconvenient time ever, just because they can. Jane reminded them all of the ultimatum in EC and the Volturi don’t give second chances.

  2. Danny says:

    I agree with Christine.

Here’s my theory: Every book in the series thus far has been based on one (*just one*) book. Twilight – Pride and Prejudice,
New Moon – Romeo and Juliet, Eclipse – Wuthering Heights. Now, I think the reason why SM said Breaking Dawn was based on two books yet only revealed one was because the other book is Twilight.

Let me explain: Like Christine said, Twilight was supposed to be a standalone novel. Never published. Sure, Stephenie might’ve thought up other possibilities, but she had not been faced with the fact that she’d have to go on until Twilight began a big hitter. Then she got the deal to write three more books, signed the contract, etc. Because of this, she had to start thinking of the plot in terms of longevity.

It seems, to me at least, that Bella changing is inevitable. I’ve always thought so since Twilight. As much as I would love for Tuck Everlasting to be the basis, Stephenie promised a happy ending, and I think she will deliver. And no one would think Bella dying as a human and Edward staying vampire is a happy ending.

So, here it is. Like Christine said, at the end of Twilight, Stephenie eluded to the fact that Edward would bite Bella. She back tracked for the sake of sequels, but ponder: if New Moon and sequel contracts had never existed, would Stephenie really be so blatant about Edward having no intention to change Bella? I don’t think so.

So in Breaking Dawn, trials and tribulations will take place. Their will be love polygons galore, with Bella missing Jacob and worrying over the wedding, and of course the Denali coming down to attend. I’m thinking that one of those Denali girls will try and persuade Edward out of marriage, but that’s another thing. Anyways, there will be imprinting, drama, etc, but in the end, in the very end of the saga from the eyes of Bella, Edward will slowly place his lips against her neck. It will be the same sort of ending as Twilight, except now Edward has different intentions.

This way Stephenie can say that the series came “full circle”. The mystery book will be Twilight.

Anyways, I’ll be sooo mad if this happens, but that’s what I’m thinking!

  3. Alexandra Landers says:

This question has many possible answers, and I think by the end of the week theorizing, us Twilighter’s would probably have named pretty much all the books worth naming. LOL, that’s how creative we are. We should get a medal or something. <3

However, this week, I noticed a pattern. Have any of you noticed that Twilight, New Moon & Eclipse were all compared & infulenced by old classics? Now, they were only parelled to one book & in that one book, most of the action was created by love. Follow me so far?

Anyway, S.M said that B.D is infulenced by TWO books. Now, M.S.N.D is a romantic book. I think that will infulence all the love action in B.D. But, I’m sure B.D will have a completely different plot line from the other books in the series, which are only compared to ONE book.

This makes B.D, & I think we will see some new writing element in it which hasn’t featured in the other books. Maybe Angela will be a witch, making the 2nd book some kind of modern day wizardy book (Hah! Wouldn’t it be so funny if it was based on HP? LOL), or their will be some kind of fight scene where S.M got the infulence from an action packed book.

Anyway. That’s just my answer, hope you followed it. Sorry for the long answer. x

  4. Alexandra Landers says:

Okaaaay, I just read my answer & I realized it kinda doesn’t make any sense. OH, & also, there is a typo in the third paragraph. Where it says “This makes B.D, &….” it should really say “This makes B.D unique & special.”

Great work girls on the podcast’s, their amazing! =]

  5. Katy says:

i have a theories that Stephanie Meyers is talking about Jane Eyre when she says about the second book
    BUT (dun dun duuh lol)
i dont think its to do with the breaking up of the wedding (hopefully :))
i think its to do with the fact that bella and jane are similar to each other because they both think they are ‘inferior’ to the people they love in some way (jane being a servant , bella a human) and at the end of the book jane marries Mr Rochester and becomes his equal.
Perhaps this may mean that Bella will get turned into a vampire (yay!) and become an ‘equal’ to Edward.
Not that i think everything will be plain sailing for their relationship. In Jane Eyre Jane goes through alot of hard times until she finally marries Mr Rochester and I think the same will be for Bella before she gets turned into a vampire.
Thats just what i think lol i hope you managed to follow it!
    love the podcasts!

  6. So…..for the question of the week you asked what other book do we think would influence Breaking Dawn.

Well, personally i think SM will stick with another Shakesphere story and go with “Julius Caesar.”

i think that Bella will portray Ceaser and Jacob will portray Marcus Brutus…

It explains that Marcus Brutus and Caeser were actually close friends. (i would say that Jacob and Bella are REALLY good friends.) But, when it was said that Ceaser would turn Rome into a monarchy, Marcus Brutus joined a group of conspiring senators. I think this refers to Breaking Dawn because it is stating that when Bella decided that she wanted to become a vampire, Jacob ran away.

    Moving along…
Caesar’s death is the most famous part of the story, it happens about halfway…..SO this could mean two things.
    1) Someone actually dies.
    2) Bella’s soul “dies” and then she is a vampire for the rest of the book. I am going with answer number two….i’ll tell you why.

The Road to Ceasers death goes like this….
Once Marcus Brutus has turned against Ceaser, Ceaser’s wife has dreams or premotions that explain that something bad will happen to Ceaser. Ceaser doesnt listen to his wife and goes to the senate anyway. While Ceaser is talking to the senate, Casca hits Ceaser in the back of the neck and the other members of the senate follow. Brutus is the last to stab Ceaser. Eventually, Ceaser dies…

This is my theory on how all of this applies to Twilight…

So after Jacob runs away, after the wedding, and right before Edward is about to decide to turn Bella into a vampire…Alice starts to have premotions that Bella will get turned before Edward wants her to be turned. And it will be a life or death situation. Bella disreguards Alices premotions and explains that everything will be fine…
Meanwhile, Jacob is having a hard time coping with the idea of Bella being turned into a vampire. So i think that Jacob will find Bella before she can be turned and crush Bella’s heart by telling her his real thoughts, about everything, Edward, being a vampire, and what he thinks about her. Somehow the situation will grow out of control and Jacob’s anger will make him phase and wound Bella. A wound so fatal that Jacob will be so overwhelmed about what he has just done, that he will let Edward break the treaty and come help Bella. Edward will has no choice but to bite Bella, right then and there, “killing” human Bella…………

so, those are just my theories, hope you like them!!!!!! Also, i love the podcast keep up the good work!

(sorry if there are grammatical errors, i didnt look it over)

  7. Meredith says:

I was watching ‘Tuck Everlasting’ earlier, and I knew it did compare to something like Twilight, because they live forever, The father telling Winnie about them like Carlisle, May is consoling like Esme, and the main character wants Immortality, but it was something else that caught my eye was the tracker going to Winnie’s parents tricking them into getting the woods. He’s really the only one that has any clue about the family’s immortality, right? Well, if Bella does run off and dissapears with The Cullens so Bella can be turned into a vampire, who are the only people who know? That’s right, the Quileute’s. We all know if Bella didn’t visit for a couple months, Charlie, and Renee would get worried. What parents wouldn’t? So maybe Billy, OR jacob would rat out the Cullens. This even furthers the theory of a complication of Bella turning into a vampire causing her not to return home. Maybe The Cullens would tell Renee, and Charlie what they are. Make’s the plot a little interesting. I don’t think Breaking Dawn will have the ending of ‘Tuck Everlasting’ Because Stephenie said she loved happy endings, but I do think something will come up like in Tuck Everlasting to make the Cullens secret be revealed. And at the big tearjerker at the end, what does Jesse say? “Until I come back, wake up with DAWN” Is that a coincidence that the title of the fourth book is ‘Breaking DAWN’? I think I know what that means. Like I said, I don’t think Breaking Dawn will have that ending, but it gives me chills to think about Edward Cullen riding away with the rest of the Cullens, using the most famous quote in Tuck Everlasting, “Winnie Foster(Bella Swan) I’ll love you till the day I die” *Chills* At the end, when Winnie goes to the water, she has flashbacks of things people have told her. Could that be the case for Bella? Could she really decide not to be turned into a vampire and live her life normally? Ughh. I shudder at the thought of Edward standing at Bella’s grave. : (

  8. vikki says:

sorry for the short idea but tuck everlasting would probrably be the other story cause edward lives forever

  9. Gabby says:

i have no idea b/c i was never into romance novels before the twilight saga but SM did have a list of fav books on her website under the Eclipse FAQ so if any1 is really intrested in what it might be read those books and find out which she might use

  10. Emily D says:

um well what I think is pretty obvious… It talks about this book enough for it to be considered in the writing…

    Anyway I think it’s Romoeo and Juliet…well I guess that’s a play not a book…anyway…that’s what I think…

  11. Nicole says:

Well, we all know that Stephanie loves Jane Austen, so Pride and Predudice might be a good choice. But, really, I think that the second book will be Wuthering Heights. There was a reason that Bella couldn’t stop reading it over and over again in Eclipse mostly, but she already compared herself with Catherine. Although, Heathcliffe was a terrible person and I’m not comparing him to Edward AT ALL, just the relationship that he and Catherine had together for a time. She would have rather died than be without him, and that’s exactly how Bella feels about Edward. Also, Edward thought that the book was stupid and he wondered why Bella read it so much, until finally he read it himself. I think that it has influenced them, and may have something to do with Breaking Dawn. How Wuthering Heights could play out in BD, I’m not too sure. But it has actually been mentioned by Bella and I think it could be a possibility 🙂

  12. Amber says:

U have to read the preface of Breaking Dawn to understand this. Anyway the preface talks about Bella about to be killed by someone she loves. Most people would think that would be Edward. WRONG!!! Bella would have already become a vampire. Then she finds Jacob and Jacob wants to kill her because she is a vampire. It could happen.

  13. Becky says:

ok i saw this answer and i also think tuck everlasting.
It talks alot about Edwards view of imortality. Winnie meets Jesse(a boy whoose imortal same as his family, like Edward)and now Winnie has to choose between being mortal or not-same as Bella. Then Jesses ends up convincing her not to be mortal. Years later he visits her grave. This part is like Bella’s nightmare in the first chapter of New Moon when Bella sees herself old and young Edward right next to her. But I hope this one is wrong, (i want Bella to change really badly, mainly because of chapter 20 Compromise in eclipse when Bella agrees to marry Edward and to let him have a year and buy the cars and pay for collge etc. and he will ‘sleep’ with her and change her)

Also its could be Anne of Green Gables
Bella mentions on page 614 of Eclipse when Alice shows her her weding dress….’It was my Anne of Green Gables vision all over again.’ So it seemed like a logical guess.
Thanks again for the awsome podcast and really sorry for the long answer.

  14. Stacey M. says:

Ok, so I haven’t read any of the previous answers cause I want to keep my thoughts fresh in my head. My 3 year old son actually helped me come up with my answer. I was cleaning his room and putting his books on his shelve and he handed me a book and asked me to read it to him. It was Peter Pan. Instantly a light went off in my head. Peter was the boy that never grows up and Wendy was the girl that would always grow old. I suddenly became worried that Bella COULD be just like Wendy and that Breaking Dawn is paralleled to a classic children’s story. Bella has a dream that she is looking at her grandma…but really she is looking in a mirror….then standing next to her….is her version Peter Pan….Edward Cullen.

Bella has a deep intuition and her dreams seem to be glimpses of her reality. Could she suffer the same fate as Wendy? Will she not be changed after all? Now before I get made fun of for comparing Breaking Dawn to a children’s book, listen to this…

(I am kinda paraphrasing right here) SM mentioned in her opening chapter of Breaking Dawn “Childhood is the kingdom where nobody dies”. To me this screams never never land. As an English major, could SM have done her research and paralleled the Millay poem and Peter Pan into Breaking Dawn? I don’t know…..It seems a little out there but a definate possibility.

I hope I am not overshooting my answer here but I just had to respond. Kassie ad Kallie could you PLEASE tell me your thoughts on this?!?!

  15. Stacey M. says:

Oh and let me add that I am all about Team Edward. I want Bella and Edward to “ride off in the sunset together.” If SM did by chance parrallel Peter Pan and Midnight Summer’s Dream to Breaking Dawn than a big part of me would be sad cause I too want my happily ever after for Edward and Bella….

  16. Chloe says:

The Host. I don’t know if someone already put that, or if it’s even right but think about it. The Host came out in early May, that’s about 4 months before Breaking dawn, the answer could be looking us right in the face. Some people have already finished the Host, or are close to being done. Now Stephenie said that she loves the classics and that she is a helpless romantic, so why couldn’t it be the Host? The Host might not be a classic but there are still many things that are the same in both stories, such as the main characters have to face a problem that will effect not only themselves but the others around them as well. Bella and Wanda are not the same at all (like the whole Alien thing) but there stories really aren’t that different. They both have to fight for the one they love. Along the way there are many other obsticles, the main one being that Bella is in love with both Jacob and Edward, while Wanda is in love with Jared and Ian. With each, Bella and Wanda’s stories being like this they must face choices that they may not be ready to pick. But when they do finally pick, they both stick to that decision that they make. Sorry if this is confusing, I might not be right, but that’s ok. Love show keep up the good work.
    Peace, Love, and Hair Grease,
    Chloe

  17. Halle says:

I’m a Huge Jane Austen fan so I think MORE JANE AUSTEN! I think probably Sense and Sensibility. Some of you are thinking WHAT!?!?!? but I will explain. When John’s wife (cant think of her name) kicks the dashwoods out of their house it makes me think of the Denali clan. I think their is a dark underlying there with Irina. She might do something terrible and end up “kicking the cullens out” of Forks. Or maybe doing something that makes Edward take Bella away for her safety. Also (and I’ll kill myself for thinking this) but… Marianne thinks she is in love with Willoughby but when he leaves she goes into a depression and gets maybe a little closer to Colonel Brandon. (seem familiar) then when Willoughby comes back and she finds he is engaged she finds herself and sees how much Colonel Brandon loves her and she loves him.
“sob” So, and I reeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaalllllly hope this doesn’t happen but what if Bella is Marianne and Edward is Willoughby and Jacob is Colonel Brandon. I like Jacob and all but not so much for him to do that. Its a thought I was reading it and they seemed familiar.

  18. Sydney says:

Callie Cullen, wow I have never thought about it like that. Being an HP fan, J.K. also used (if I remember correctly) a lot of ironic play on names sort of thing.

And also, in many other novels the Bible had been a basis off of it. I studied ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe’ in my literature class and had to write a whole paper on the correlations between it and the Bible.

Anyway, I have a question…how are all you people saying that it has to do with Forever Dawn or whatever even thought its never been posted. Not to be mean but…duh it will have to do with it. And if you HAVE read it…TELL US WHERE!

I do see the correlation between the Twilight story and Tuck Everlasting but I hope to God we are all WAY WRONG!

To close, I HAVE A WICKED IDEA THAT NO ONE HAS THOUGHT OF! I know this is far fetched but not totally out of the picture: What if there is some way (please?) that Edward can become human again. If this is part of the story I bet there will be come kind of sacrafice needed for it.

  19. shelby says:

uhmm yaa i have already firgured that one out but thanks for reminding everyone bout that…heheh 😉

  20. Emily Bee says:

To tell you the truth i must say, i have no earthly idea what the other book is. But i have thrown out the idea of all the recent books (i.e., harry potter, uglies, tuck everlasting), this is because she seems to enjoy the “classics”. Just a little word for thought.

  21. Nicole S. says:

The correlations of New Moon and Eclipse were both mentioned in the previous books. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is also mentioned in Eclipse. Following this pattern, Anne of Green Gables would have to be the other book. I don’t really see a close correlation though, other than the romances and some minor personality traits.

I agree that Jane Eyre would be a great second correlation.

  22. Michelle says:

Sydney, that wicked idea that no one has thought of, has been thought of several times before. I suggest you look at Supporter’s Speculations Page 2 because it has been mentioned there many times.

  23. tesa says:

Hey!your podcast rocks. i have a few comments/questions before my answer to Q of the week and i didn’t know where else to post them so here they are: a few weeks ago, i think you mentioned cheap Twilight posters. do you know where to find them for under $60?also,a random question: why does everyone say that we’re going to find out alec’s power in bd? did i miss something there?sorry for babbling, here’s what i think the “mystery book” might be:
I think it would be interesting if Breaking Dawn were based on the book or movie of Frankenstein/Young Frankenstein. this could be so because it’s bella’s new start of a life as a “monster” without control. another theory that i’ve heard about breaking dawn is
that the cullens might try to turn human rather than bella turning vampire.i don’t think this will happen, but that could also correspond with Frankenstein in the sense that it’s trying to make a dead person alive again. thanks for listening to my crazy theory.
    -Tesa
ps: i love the host seg.i’ve been reading along with you guys, even though kassie goes a little slow for my taste(no offense)

  24. Amber says:

    It’s Wuthering Heights.

  25. erika from canada says:

wow. I think everyone is underestimating Stephenie Meyer and being blinded by what they’re being led to believe (from Eclipse), and what they know they want to happen.
I believe that maybe there is a second classic book she’s refering to but a bigger part of me thinks that she is refering to Forever Dawn.
Stephenie said herself that she had made an origonal sequel, but it was to “mature” for the teens. But, she said she would NOT post it because she was using parts of it to write her now famous sequels. When I heard the title of that book, Forever Dawn, I just automatically thought, “Well, that’s it. Bella becomes a vampire.” I mean, come on, FOREVER Dawn? What does that sound like to you? But the fact that she CHANGED the title to BREAKING Dawn is making me crazy!
Back to my first point, I would be very hesitant on comparing Stephenie to all these other books, movies, authors, etc. because
1)Stephenie RARELY does the expected and
2)Her books cannot be compared to others without switching around either stories.
Good luck girls and keep doing these podcasts! I love them and it helps my mind look at other’s perspectives and morph them into my own. I love them!

  26. Amanda says:

I think that BD will relate to Much Ado About Nothing. (

In Much Ado About Nothing, the two characters-Hero and Claudio- fall in love and decide to get married. However, Don John (Claudio’s half-brother) is jealous of Claudio and decides to come up with a plan to ruin the wedding. He has one of his partners make it appear that he is kissing Hero when really it is one her friends. Claudio believes that Hero has betrayed him and on their wedding day, humiliates her in front of all their wedding guests and doesn’t marry her. Eventually, Claudio finds out that he has been fooled and he and Hero are eventually married.

I think this would relate to BD in that Hero is Bella and Claudio is Edward. I think the Volturi will not want Edward and Bella to marry and so make it appear that Bella has returned to Jacob. Edward would see this and feel betrayed since Bella had previously made her choice and they have planned a whole wedding. In the end, Edward will see that he was wrong and will marry Bella.

Hope that sounds about right! Thanks!

  27. The REAL Mrs. Edward Cullen says:

I have really thought hard about this and I think that the second book will be a classic, one that maybe deals with childhood. I think maybe a fairy tale or something of the sort, due to the poem in the preface of Breaking Dawn. It also is in accordance to SM picking Midsummer as an inspiration, since overall it is a childish play, dealing with partly silly themes like donkeys’ heads and mistaken potion results. Someone above mentioned Peter Pan, and that would really make sense. Remember, SM never completely uses the book she was inspired from. For instance, she used Romeo and Juliet, yet both Edward and Bella are alive (well, kind of…). Through the Looking Glass seems probable- Its loosely based on a game of chess including red and white pieces, namely a white queen, red pawn, etc. This correlates with the Breaking Dawn cover. Also this is in relation with the short poem at the beginning of BD. I don’t know. All I can say is- We will have to read to find out.

xoxo, The REAL Mrs. Edward Cullen

  28. courtney says:

hey i thnk i goes with romeo and juliet because in the book both of them die but edward is already dead and now it is bellas turn to die so she can be immortal with edward forever!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. Me says:

Well… I’m not that big a reader when it comes to plays from somewhere around the 40’s… but since the last two were sorta like Romeo and Juliet and Wuthering Hieghts–which are like the only ones I know–I wouldn’t even ask myself for an opinion. But I love where Breaking Dawn is going so far. I think that Bella and Edward will be in the middle of thier wedding and the pack will show up at the reception. Edward smells them and thinks they want to talk so he goes into the forest alone. (The wedding either takes place in the Meadow or the Cullen’s backyard) Alice asks where Edward is but Bella freaks out and thinks it’s actually the Volturi. Alice reassures her and then freaks out herself because it is the pack but she can’t see anything. She takes Bella into the forest and leaves her in a secluded spot while she tries to find her brother. Paul comes and tries to convince Bella that Edward doesn’t really love her because he has no heart and that she should go back to Jake. She realizes Jake told him to do this and that he’s probably attacking Edward as they spoke. Alice attacks Paul and Bella vantures off to find Edward but trips and hits her head on a rock. She passes out after hearing Edward yell her name. She wakes up but no one realizes and she hears some stuff she’s not meant to. Apparntley Edwar’s hands got ripped off by Jake and Alice got hurt but no one says how they only say she’s in bad shape. *pant, pant, pant* Bella asks what happened and everyone freaks because they didn’t want her to hear that. She cleans herself up and tells her parents ( the last people still there from the wedding) everything’s okay. They leave after a few words about responsibility from Charlie. Bella decides it’s time to say bye to Jake so she talks to Seth and tells him to pass her goodbye along to Jake. He says okay and Jake replies that she should still pick him. They have a whole conversation through Seth and Bella wins! *HAHA* The honeymoon happens but something bad happens *Unknown. maybe Edward flakes out or something? I’m still working some of the kinks* and Bella didn’t get any of her wishes fullfilled. They go back home in bad moods and find Jake waiting at the airport for them staring at Alice and Jasper, talking. Jake is trying to convince them to convince Bella to go to him. They go outside and break into a fight. Bella doesn’t know what to do and Jasper’s power isn’t working. There’s so much tension that he’s too freaked to do anything. Bella wants them to stop and gets in the middle of Edward and Jake but Jake’s claw scratches her and Edward’s teeth bite her forearm. Now everything stops. They go to the Cullens’ and Carlisle says the venom has gone too far for anyone to take it out now… Okay… I don’t feel like writing anymore. Jeez that is A LOT of words. I think I have a problem with blogging. 🙁

  30. Me says:

HOLY CROW! what does that mean? holy crow… hmmm. I think it’s Holy crap and holy cow put together.

  31. liz says:

i agree with the people above that the second story is going to be either anne of green gables or tuck everlasting. or romeo and juilet but that basically has already happened. i hope its not tuck everlasting thought b/c i want edward to bite bella so they will always be together. but i guess we will have to wait and see.

  32. Katy says:

So first off I love the Jane Eyre idea. It totally fits into my theory, but I also found another book that fits my theory so I’ll talk about that one instead. The three books that we have so far are Twilight- Pride and Prejudice, New Moon – Romeo and Juliet, and Eclipse-Wuthering Heights. Now we know Midsummer Night’s Dream is one and that fits in with the Shakespeare parellel we saw in book two, so I think the 2nd book will also fit the great romance of the 19th century written by women that Pride and Prejudice and Wuthering Heights fufills. I submit for your theorizing pleasure…Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. I can hear the collective “What’s?” but there is a relation. It was published in 1868 the same era as the other two romances, and while it is not often remembered as a great romance there is a fantastic story between Jo and Laurie. From when they were little Laurie has always been in love with Jo and she rebelled against it. Eventually Laurie realizes that he is in love with her younger sister, and was so blinded by Jo that he didn’t notice her becoming a woman. Jo eventually marries a fellow school teacher, and all is well with the world.
I love this because Laurie is the one to get over Jo and Jo even resents the fact that he is with Beth, but eventual gets over it.

So to make the comparison Jacob is Laurie, Bella is Jo, Edward is the hot other teacher, and Beth is … well I haven’t quite worked that out yet. The important this is that Jacob moves on from Bella. I adore Jacob, I also adore Cassie :), but Jacob is the guy I want for me not for Bella. I want to see him get over her because it will add a lot of growth to the character. And of course I want to see Bella happy, but she really hasn’t been rejected by someone she likes. True New Moon was a horrible tragic event, but Edward did it because he loved her. So a little rejection for Bella would also provide her with some amazing growth as a character, and then she can live happily ever after with Edward, and Jacob can live happily ever after with me 🙂

With all this being said I actually think Jane Eyre is the second book, but I just love finding reasons why other books can fit. This one has been my favorite so far and you never know.

I adore you both 🙂 Keep doing what you’re doing.

    Katy

  33. Delaney Jo says:

You guys rock. I love your podcast. *sings* Suporters speculations!
but anyways, onto the mystery book.

Of course breaking dawn will have to follow Forever Dawn for a lot of the story. BUT i have a feeling that is not what you mean.

I have heard a lot about the “mystery story” being tuck everlasting. I think this is true. I mean look at it
the cullens are the Tucks they have found a way to be immortal and bella is Winnie she has to choose if she wants to be immortal or not.
Although I sincerly hope that Bella gets bitten because everyone in the world would be upset if Bella didn’t become a vampire.

Well, i cannot think of anymore to say. Thanks.

i already wrote about frankenstein, and another thing that i thought of is that the cullens tell bella that she would lose her mind for about a year.
Frankenstein(in Young Frankenstein movie;i’m not sure about the book) lost his mind b/c it was replaced with another brain, but once he got control of it, he was ok.i think the same would happen to bella, only not in such a literal sense.
i was in germany at a book signing, but i didn’t get my book signed by her:( i hope she comes back soon!

    Stacey M’s theory is amazing.

  36. Carley (List Gurl) says:

This is acutally something I’ve thought about and I feel that ‘The Phantom of The Opera’ is the second book. Before you think that I’m completely mental, think about it this way, Edward is Erik, a strage and mysterious musical genius who only thinks of himself as a hidious monster and un-natural. Bella is Chistine Daae, the beautiful show girl who Erik (Edward) falls in love with, like Bella she doesn’t see her self very clearly and belittles herself. Jacob is Viscount Raoul de Chagny, the charming child hood friend of Christine (Bella), who is in love with her. Erick falls in love with Chistine because of her beautiful singing voice, as Edward falls in love with Bella because of her smell. (She is his La tua Cantante, which means ‘your singer’.) Sadly, in the end Christine (Bella) is torn between her two loves (Erik (Edward) and Raoul (Jacob)) but elpoes with Viscount Raoul de Chagny (Jacob) leaving Erik (Edward) to die alone and with regrets (but Edward can’t die so he’ll just have to get over it). This is not a very ‘Team-Edward’ Friendly choice, which makes me sad because Bella belongs with Edward, but someone needs to give the posibility of a happy ending for Jacob. Kassie will just have to get over it. Love the podcast keep it up.

  37. Victoria says:

I think the second story will be Wuthering Heights, like Bella loves to read. Not sure how, I don’t have any idea what it’s about myself. So I don’t know how my theory about what happens will work with it.

And as far as Break Dawn goes, my theory… It’s a little choppy, so bear with me.

Bella and Edward’s wedding date is coming closer, and Jacob is having a lot of trouble dealing with it.

Something happens and it delays the wedding. Like Jacob tries to stop them or something, he can’t stand the thought of Bella becoming a bloodsucker.

The Volturi begin to get impatient while waiting for Bella to be changed, so they start sending warnings and threats.

But, by the end, there is going to be a huge fight between the Volturi, the Cullens, and the wolves, with Bella at the center. She thinks it’s all her fault.

Jacob gets hurt really really really bad during the fight, and can’t heal fast enough, so he starts dying. But, Bella begs Carlisle to change him into a vampire to save him.

So we get a Jacob werepire, vamwolf… a hybrid basically. Super strong, has all the qualities of both races. And he basically becomes the “treaty” that binds the wolves and the vampires together to keep from fighting.

Bella will remain human, and even though it breaks her heart, she chooses the human life, and not a life with Edward or Jacob. Because Edward already wishes that Bella would choose the human life, Jacob feels the same way once he becomes a half-vamp too.

But somewhere along the lines, Charlie finds out what is going on and about the vampires and werewolves and such. Maybe Renee too.

That’s all I have so far. It could get alot more complicated than that. But think of it… if Jacob became the one thing he hates… so he would be a wolf and a vampire… think of it! crazy!

  38. Katie says:

First off, you guys are uberspectacular and I adore the podcast.

I believe that the other book is Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell. The reasons behind this belief is that in a section of her website, Stephenie mentions the heroine of Gone With The Wind, Scarlett O’Hara, and her beau, Rhett. Also, there are obvious similarities between the two main characters of both novels. Rhett is whitty, tall, strong, and can seemingly read the minds of the simple-minded upper class acquaintences of Scarlett’s, similar to Edwards ability to read the minds of everyone, excepting Bella. He loves Scarlett and is afraid to directly state it at times, fearing that Scarlett will leave him, as Edward is afraid that Bella will be frightened of Edward’s intense love for her and leave his side. Scarlett and Bella are both strong women who really don’t have a family, have similar relationships with their fathers, and take awhile to realize the love that Rhett/Edward has for them respectively is as intense as the love that they feel for them. Their relationship is that of constant scrutiny and disapproval by most of their acquaintences, as Edward and Bella’s is, and also not a relationship that would be considered normal in their time period. Jacob plays the part in the series that Ashley plays in Gone With the Wind, he is the man Scarlett believes she’s in love with, sadly realizing too late that it is Rhett that is her true love. Hopefully Breaking Dawn will not have a similar ending to this book, for that would be hardly bearable for an Edward fan or a Jacob fan, for the heroine ends up with neither in the novel, but I put it out there regardless. You gals are pimptastic, stay classy. : ]

  39. Laura says:

Sticking with a vampire theme I think that the second book might be The Tale of the Body Theif by Anne Rice, the fourth book in the vampire chronicles. Breaking Dawn is the fourth Book in the twilight saga.

Lestat has been alone for many years now that the coven of old vampires has broken up. His only friend is David Talbot, a man with extreme psychic abilities who refuses Lestat’s offer of the Dark Gift. Lestat is depressed about his vampiricism, and tries to kill only serial killers and other criminals. When a man called Raglan James tracks him down and offers him a week in a human body, Lestat is intrigued. He longs to recapture his humanity in an attempt at redemption. And despite all of his friends’ warnings, he goes through with the process and switches bodies with James – a kleptomaniac.

I think that this may be the second book because we know it has to somehow go with a midsummer nights dream and it could easily. If you replaced David Talbot with Alice you have the phychic Lestat would obviously be Edward judging by the personality and Raglan James would be Alec. Thats where I think a midsummer nights dream would come in. We know that magic is a key elemnt to both stories so instead of it being body switching Alec would have some sort of power possibly making people think tehy are different people (Edward feeling human) or going with a misdummer nights dream makinng people belive they are in love with the wrong person. I know its a long shot but a MAJOR long shot but it could work.

Hi, let us just say that we LOVE LOVE LOVE your podcast and if you ever stop them we will cry. Okay, maybe not cry…but you get the picture. I actually got part of this answer from one of my friends who doesn’t have working internet access so she asked me to put it on for her (claps for Emilee B!). We were talking about the Gorgeous Edward Cullen and came up with this.
We think that Breaking Dawn will be loosely based on A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Tuck Everlasting. We go to school together, and a few years ago we watched the movie and read the book in class. In the story, Jesse Tuck is immortal, having drunk from the fountain of youth. Winnie is his soulmate and must choose between immortality and a regular life. When Jesse needed to leave he left her to face the decision alone.
Sadly, fifty (I think it was fifty…correct me if I’m wrong) years later, he finds her grave, expecting to see her.
I really hope that we are wrong and that Bella will become a vampire and live happily ever after with the Gorgeous Edward Cullen (yes, that is what we call him!). However, we could not just leave it out there unmentioned.
Once again you guys are fabulous and please, please, PLEASE don’t make us cry…no pressure. Haha just kidding you guys are just too amazing and hilarious to make ANYONE even the least bit upset in any way…YOU ROCK!
    Kallie, Kassie, you are saints.

To be honest I’m entirely clueless as to what the other story could be,. I do, however, have an opinion about what story it had better NOT be based on…I will smack somebody’s Mama if the other story is The Wizard of Oz and it turns out to all have been a dream! It seriously makes my blood boil just considering the possibility. The scary thing is…it could happen. After all, Bella’s dreams play an important role in the entire series and taking it one step further…Stephenie Meyer dreamed the story herself so it’s possible that she could throw that little curveball at us. Sheesh I can’t get it out of my head now! What if Bella is dreaming all this the night before she moves in with Charlie and she has to decide whether or not to still move to Forks knowing what the future has in store for her there? What would “Phoenix Bella” have though about marrying a vampire and having a werewolf best friend? What if she decided not to go?!?!? I would throw the book through the nearest available window an proceed to throw a full-on, adult tantrum. I can’t think about this anymore, I just went into panic attack mode. I love your show by the way. must…breathe… thinking calm thoughts…

  43. Demi says:

I think it is The Vampire Chronicles. They are not affected by garlic, crosses, and they cannot be killed with wooden stakes. They preferre human blood but animal blood can also be drunk. They do not age instead they developing very smooth, white skin. A lot can’t turn into bats only the older ones can. They can move very quickly and have great strength and really good senses. Some can have additional gifts like the ability to move matter with the mind and the ability to set things ablaze by the force of will but only very old vampires or ones who have been made or strengthened by feeding on blood that is close to the root of the vampiric mother can. They can almost mimic anything. They are usually attractive. The physical changes are their eyes become bright, their skin pale and reflective, their fingernails like glass, and their hair will grow back during their sleep if it is cut. As they lose all natural bodily fluids, they are unable to have children. They also can have
    gifts.

  44. Demi says:

I have never read The Vampire Chronicles but I was looking it up and found some very close simaites with the Twilight Vampires.

  45. Kelly says:

Argh! I can’t think of any other books! I’m so obsessed with Twilight, I can’t remember another good book. I do think that Forever Dawn will have something to do with it though…but again, that’s Twilight series!

  46. Laura says:

I read the wizard of oz thing and my friend suggested the same thing not with that book but that that might happen and yeah it cant or stephanie meyer is going to have a lot of sad crying fans, myself included lol. The other book I am praying that it is not is Hamlet, that would ruin my life unless Bella and edward lived 😀

  47. i posted this on the forum too.

maybe a book more similar to MSND. but i can’t think of anything with love potions….OME except Tristan and Isolde. but that is WAY to much like R&J and we already had that.

but here was a llove potion in T&I, and i don’t think it was Isolde, but Tristan that had the two loves, with the Irish Isolde and the Isolde of the White Hands.

no…..there was the King that Isolde was won for. and then Tristan who she fell in love with through the potion…and even though she was with the king she was still inlove with Tristan secretly and ended up with Tristan in the end because i’m almost postive the king dies. and she was really unhappy with the King.

BUT comparing that to the cover Isolde would be the queen, making Bella the queen.

but would her Tristan be Jake or Edward? or would one be the King?

oh man….this is good. read the book. theres actually several books. but i read one that was a trilogy. the movie with the cutie in it was thourghly horrible. so don’t watch it….

-Isolde goes off on her own and is living in a Leper’s den thinking that Tristan is dead (she’s not a leper thought)

-when he comes back (which he does) his appearance still has youth, like he hasn’t aged much. (I’m guessing that they’re around like 20 when they fall in love and 50ish at the end of the book)

-Isolde looks old and has aged a lot.

(but this was just in the version I read and there are a more than a few versions of this story)

    NOW RELATED TO BREAKING DAWN:
so i’m thinking that maybe Bella will go with Jacob (NO NO NO NO NO!!!!) and then Jake will die or something or imprint and she’ll be like 25ish and Eddie will come back and they’ll live happily ever after.

  48. Kat says:

I believe that the tuck everlasting is a far fetch scenerio due to the fact that for it to relate to that she would still have to be considering and pondering on choosing whether to stay mortal or become a vampire with Edward.
And the harry potters can we all say WTF harry potter is not a love story in the least maybe like 2 to three chapters worth with ginny weasley okay think before you write.
With the accusations of having Romeo and juilet be the second book for breaking dawn has already been played out from the second book she is not going to do two shakespeares in one book. little cliche.
With the jane eyre and through the looking glass are probably the best choices due to the fact that lewis carrol and charlotte bronte are both in lists of stephanie meyers inspirations and both can relate to the ending of the series for breaking dawn. and please don’t relate this to harry potter!!!!!!! >_<

  49. lo carr says:

ok. so meyer has used pride n prejudice, romeo and juliet, wuthering heights..the classics:shakespear, austen, bronte. which makes me think that the next story she uses will also be a classic and not contemporary given her previous pattern..so i think it crosses out the books that have been written in the last i dunno 50 years…like harry potter, tuck everlasting. so i was thinking, what other author that is a classic has she not used, which led me to dickens which then leads me to great expectations. i just think that the ending could be applied to breaking dawn. i havent analysed it deeply but i think theres a possibility..i also like jane eyre as a possibility.but i just hope that edward doesnt have to be maimed or for time to laspe before bella returns to him the way rochester had. (remember the burning..losing an arm and being blind) that would blow!!!!!!!!!

  50. Helen says:

hello i am going to answer the question of the week and then share something that i thought of today. first of all i think it will be jane eyre for the second story. now i was thinking today about the b.d. and i think i am on to something, the enemy is going to be marie i think thats her name she was the quenn of the newborns so to speak, so i think she will come back for jasper, remember he said he just walked away, no fight. now she will use bella as a pawn to get to him. so midsummer aspect would have the love triangle of alice/jasper/marie. so bella is the pawn on the cover, marie is the queen and any or all of them will die except for e&b and a&j because steph said she has a detailed outline of a book 5 that is not midnight sun and those 4 names are the only ones she mentioned
