  2. Nathalie says:

The Hunger Games is probably one of the best books I’ve ever read (aside from the Twilight series, DUH). I especially love the characters. Peeta is such a sweet boy and I love how him and Catniss were able to bond during the games, although I thought that the whole concept of the games was a bit too barbaric for me. Anywho, Catniss is awesome. I think she is a true role model for girls today, even if she is just a book character (hey, don’t we all avoid admitting that Edward is only a made-up work of fantasy fiction?) Catniss is such a brave and hard-working girl for her age. She lives for her family; Catniss knows that if she were gone, they would struggle through life without her help. She devotes all of her time to keeping her family safe and healthy. And I especially loved it when Catniss stepped up for her sister (WHAT is her name??) to take her place in the games. That act showed true committment to her sister and revealed how much of an unselfish and magnificent person she really is. Although the book is on the verge of super extreme for me (for example, the cameras that you can’t even see and the fat bue people of the Capitol) it send a great message to readers. This is a book for all ages and I would definitely recommend is to anyone. Plus, did you know that The Hunger Games is one of Stephanie Meyer’s favorite books? Just thought that was AWESOME. No wonder so many Twilight fans love it. Anyways, love the podcast Kassie & Kallie…keep it up!! 🙂

    Wow! Where to start?!
This is a such a stellar book!
It’s pretty well balanced in the gore and romance. I really love how it’s about our society and how younf people are affected by war and violence and a sadistic government. It does show out government in a new light that is certainly a possiblity. anything could happen and this government just scares me and motivates me to get more involved! lol
I really enjoy Suzanne’s writing style and how she perceives Katniss too.
She seems insecure and doubtful. She’s been hurt by her father’s death and doesn’t want to be hurt again. It’s sad how she has ot work by herself to support Prim and her mother. It does show us that teens are capable though and it’s really inspiring and uplifting. She does grow minimally throughout the course of the book into a stronger Katniss but she’s in an even more dangerous place after winning the Games than ever before.
I really love the cooky names and style and technology used by eveyone! It’s SO cool! I LOVE Cinna! He’s a Quiet Madman. lol
I’m really excited to see what happens with Peeta, Katniss, and Gale. I can’t wait for the sequel, Catching Fire! Hopefully it will be just as great!
Thanks for the great podcast and keep up the great work!

  6. Alec_Bella says:

Soz, what’s the book about???? I haven’t read or heard of it except in the podcasts (of course)…

  7. maddie says:

I thought it was a great book. The whole games i thought Peeta and katniss were going to end up together. Then on the train she was thinking of Gale so i don’t know. Now at the end it says end of “book one” does that mean there’s going to be more. I hope so but then again would Katniss go back into the games? Or would it be Peeta or Prim?

  8. wendy says:

I really enjoyed The Hunger Games, and I wasn’t sure I would. It reminds me a bit of the short story I read in school called The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, which at the time was extremely disturbing to me. Cross that story with the TV show Survivor and add in a small amount romance you get a good generalization of the plot. I don’t want to give away too much though!!!
I must admit that I did not realize this was to be a series of books. I was anxiously reading the end of it last night and turned to the final page and saw ‘end of book 1’ and I wanted to scream NOOOOOO!!!!! Of course I didn’t for fear of waking up my 3 small kids and husband. But I was not able to fall asleep after that. Needless to say I will be impatiently waiting for the next installment.
I found that, with the exception of one scene in the area, the author managed to keep the anticipation and action going while keeping the gore factor to only what was necessary. I was enthralled with the fact that the author has taken such a power charged and violent situation and added in such a contrasting element as romance and discovery of love and what it means to be loved. Then add in the political statements and……what a story. I did find it a bit slow for the first 1/3 of the book, but I do realize it was necessary for the plot and character/world building element. I am eagerly waiting to read more character growth from Katniss as she matures. I really like her character. And just for the record, I had tears streaming when Rue was being decorated in flowers and given the salute.
An excellent read…Thanks Stephenie for cluing us all in on a fantastic story!! Thanks Kallie and Kassie for taking time to discuss it!!

  9. Alecia says:

I just bought the Hunger Games because I knew you guys were gonna be talking about it. I read 220 pages today, from the beginning. I couldn’t put it down! My science teacher even got mad ’cause I was reading it during class… oops…
Anyway, so far… I LOVE IT!!!!!!!! Besides the Twilight books, it is my favorite.I really want to know what Gale was gonna say to Katniss before she left; when the Peacemakers ripped them apart! I love Peeta, he is sooooo sweet! I love during the interviews, when he said he had a crush on Katniss…. I was jumping up and down in the car.
I could ramble on and on and on… but I won’t…
    LOVE LOVE LOVE your podcast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Libbey says:

Battle Royale was way better. Much more graphic and I believe a more believable story line. Definitely for a mature audience.

  11. Harley says:

    Alecia
Haha we both have mad teachers!!!
but its worth reading in classs because its a really good book!!!
oh and i hate my teachers so its fun to making them mad!

  12. Melaine says:

I LOVED the Hunger Games. When I read the plot summary though, I wasn’t so sure it was my kind of book but Stephenie was so high on it that I thought I’d give it a try since I was desperate for something new. What I found was that it was incredibly well written and that it had a very strong and inspiring female main character. The plot was engaging and the character development was brilliant and a joy to explore. I don’t want to spoil it for those who haven’t read it yet but I can say that I can’t wait for September and the next book. When I got to the end and read “End of Book 1”, I almost fell out of my chair! I thought “OH NO! Another series to obsess about!!” In the meantime, I’ve been telling all my friends and my son’s middle school book club to check it out. Thanks TST for featuring this fantastic book!

I read this book in November and could not put it down, I read it pretty much straight through. One thing I LOVED about it was the obvious “Love triangle” I am sooo team Peeta, Gale who? I know we did not hear much about Gale and I am pretty sure we will in the next book, but I already don’t like him much, I have a feeling he is going to come between Peeta and Katniss. This part of the book reminded me of Twilight and the whole Bella, Edward, Jacob thing, only this time I am thinking Peeta is more like Jacob and Gale more like Edward, do you get that feeling? Everytime I read about Peeta it reminded me of Jacob. I did however love that Katniss was not so much like Bella (pre-vampire), she seems stronger, no matter what happened to her she kept on going through to the end, she did not give up. I cried when a certain someone died, I laughed at a couple oddball moments, Peeta in the mud, I screamed when certain things happened (bees) YUCK! What a powerful ending to the Hunger games with the hounds/beasts and the meaning of them. In a way this book reminded me of The lord of the flies, with kids doing what they had to, to survive. I however did not like the last chapter of the book and how we were left with that last scene from Peeta and Kat, WTheck? Seriously? What is wrong with that girl! LOL. I am so glad this is a series and I can not wait for Catching Fire. I also can’t wait to see what you girls think about it on the Podcast!

  14. cori says:

i loved the hunger games i feel like during part two and three that i was standing right next to katniss. i found it really hard to picture an actress to play her. i do that when i read every book. but yet like right away i pictured the guy wh plays eragon as Peeta. i was not satisfied with the ending on the train. it’s like Katniss used Peeta to survive, i wish she would stop mentioning Gale throughout the book, i mean HELLO KATNISS IT”S NOT RIGHT TO USE PEOPLE AND SAY U LOV THEM IN THE HUNGER GAMES. i think that peeta and katniss hav really good chemistry, and Gale and Katniss hav nothing but friendship.

  15. Stephanie says:

omg!!!! The Hunger Games is the greatest book I have ever read. Each page led me to turning to the next; I could not put the book down! I can’t wait until Catching Fire comes out and I hear there is going to be a movie!. I am The Hunger Game’s number 1 fan!!! I love all the stuff between Katniss and Peeta; but it’s sad at the end on the train (I agreaa cori). It is all so exciting; I love Rue she seems so sweet and FoxFace is just Damn cool. Cota and Clove I just hate, but I think it was cool for Thresh to save Katniss. [[[Now I hope anyone who reads this – I’m not spoiling what happens in the book]]] This book is just FANTASTIC!!!

  16. Abigail says:

I dont know what to say or how to express my feelings for this book. At first I didnt want to read it because personally i hate reading. I just read this book because it was set for summer reading. A boy recomended it to our teacher and she gave it to us. I was cursing out this boy, like what the hell its almost 400 pages long. I started reading it by midday giving my self 2 chapters per day but all that went right through the window cause i finished it at 7 pm that day. That was a personal record that i think will never happen again ( only when reading this series). I didnt know it was a series till i finished it and saw END OF BOOK ONE. I was atmy grandmas house and she was so proud of me all day cause i was reading. smashed that book up the wall and started cusing at suzanne collins, i hate her for leaving me hanging. like wtf but i love her. I have to say she’s got to stay with peetah cause if gale felt anything toward her he woulda said something i mean theyve been hunting ALONE for years EVERYDAY and nothing has happend in between them. Katniss herself said at the begining there was nothing romantic i cant belive she was so stupid to start falling for him when she left. SHe was such a fool thinkink peetah was making it up (love stuff) cause it was evident he really loves her. Even Hellen Keller must have seen that, she would have know a good boy when he came up. I knew he wasnt making the lovestuff up ever since katniss shoved him in front of the elevator and said it was HIS idea, why else would he have confessed his feelings. Im so mad at her and little Mrs. collins. CANT WAIT FOR CATCHING FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. TEAM PEETA!!! :D says:

    BEST BOOK EVER!!!!
I just finished the first, it was amazing! i cannot wait for the second one!
Suzzane Colling is a terrific writer and it absorbs you in. In no parts did it drag or get soppy or boring. I couldn’t put it down, i sat there for hours reading.
In my opinion even though i am obbsessed with twilight teh hunger games is better. And the genre isn’t even my thing but i tried it and i loved it! It is okay there making there making a movie but i am just afraid to be dissapointed and even though i love Kristen (who they are thinkign of playign Katniss) i do not want her to play her. She is a bad actor.

That is my opinion. The hunger games is AWESOME!!!!!

  18. Kendra says:

I am REALLY getting fed up with people comparing twilight to The Hungry Games. Stephenie Meyer could not write, it was like a sixth grader’s fantasy. It was stupid and didn’t have a good plot, and it was predictable and just stupid. Like I said before, it would be good for a sixth grade English assignment. Anyway, The Hunger Games. I loved Katniss’s personality, and that she actually had one, and as well as faults. This is what creates a book. Peeta was a little annoying, but that was part of what made him perfect. It created excellent conflict to the book. The fact that they were suppose to be in love played a definite role in the book which added twists and even more conflict. The ending was amazing, I don’t care what anyone says. Unlike twilight where every ending was a crowd pleaser and had almost no conflict for the main character because all she had to worry about was which cool guy with super powers and could save her life to choose. I’m surprised she could keep people reading. The ending wasn’t a big suprise, I mean she was talking about pretending to be in love and how she thought Peeta wasn’t the whole time. It wasn’t a big drop off, though the second book’s ending is a HUGE one. IT’S AWESOME, YOU SHOULD READ IT!!!

  19. Kendra says:

and btw, pretending to be in love was the plan. and that’s how she survived. He was suppose to be pretending too. It WASN’T HER FAULT!

  20. Kendra says:

and people! don’t even start with the team crap, she’s NOT choosing. she pretended to be in love, she wasn’t really. And she said she was never getting married. SHE IS NOT CHOOSING either one!

  21. Chelsea says:

I just finished this book for a school project and it was UUHHMAZINGG! i actually begged my mom to go buy me the second book in the series. But it was really good and the ending just made me want more! i cant wait until the last book comes out in August!

  22. Jenni says:
