Kassie and I are discussing a bit of Twilight news this week, but our main discussion is of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.  We don’t go into great detail, but there are a few spoilers, so beware!  I take a crack at bringing up some Supporter’s Specculations, and Kassie brings up her crazy dreams instead… I am not sure whick is more entertaining!?!?!  This week’s music is Hang On by Fugitive Souls.

Hi guys, loving the podcast – keep up the great work!

With regards to ‘The Hunger Games’ – it draws similarities to two other books that I’ve read and recommend: ‘Battle Royale’ by Koushun Takami and ‘The Long Walk’ by Stephen King (writing under the pseudonym Richard Bachman).

In both Battle Royale and The Long Walk, the story is set in an alternate future where the countries (Japan and US) are dictated by almost a military/police-style government. In the same vein as ‘The Hunger Games’, the youth are regarded as out-of-control and despised by the State, so in order to punish them, the government introduces a compulsory program whereby every year, teenagers across the country are randomly selected (lottery style) to participate and then are pitted against each other, until there is only one survivor.

If you enjoyed ‘The Hunger Games’, I definitely recommend the two books mentioned above. I wonder if Suzanne Collins has read either BR and TLW and if so, whether she drew on these two stories as inspiration/influence.

A cool site for book lovers i just found is goodreads.com

There you can find recommended books and reviews by tons of other readers. You can rate books yourself, review them, and keep a list of all the books you’ve read. It’s really great for finding new books and hearing others opinions.

By the way some of the negative Twilight reviews are hilarious!

  8. Kelly says:

I had never heard of this book until the podcast (and will have to check it out) and then I saw this today!
