With regards to ‘The Hunger Games’ – it draws similarities to two other books that I’ve read and recommend: ‘Battle Royale’ by Koushun Takami and ‘The Long Walk’ by Stephen King (writing under the pseudonym Richard Bachman).

In both Battle Royale and The Long Walk, the story is set in an alternate future where the countries (Japan and US) are dictated by almost a military/police-style government. In the same vein as ‘The Hunger Games’, the youth are regarded as out-of-control and despised by the State, so in order to punish them, the government introduces a compulsory program whereby every year, teenagers across the country are randomly selected (lottery style) to participate and then are pitted against each other, until there is only one survivor.

If you enjoyed ‘The Hunger Games’, I definitely recommend the two books mentioned above. I wonder if Suzanne Collins has read either BR and TLW and if so, whether she drew on these two stories as inspiration/influence.
