Chris Weitz Discusses Critic & Fan Reaction

Nov 25th, 2009 | By | Category: Featured Articles, Movie News

EW has a new interview with Chris Weitz, who talks about New Moon’s giant box office numbers, and how he feels about the negative critical reviews.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What was your biggest fear going into [opening] weekend?
CHRIS WEITZ:
I didn’t have any particular fears. The tracking numbers were enough to indicate that I wouldn’t be letting the studio down. But if one could imagine their biggest fears, it would be complete rejection of the movie, by the fans. What I’ve realized over the last week is I won’t necessarily get good reviews for this movie. Having swallowed that, this was made for the fans, and if you don’t get it, then you don’t get it.

Did the negative reviews surprise you?
Nothing surprises me in terms of reviews. Having been a reviewer myself, there are only two ways to spin this story. You can either be the one guy who says this is a great movie, or more likely, take a more jaundiced view of the whole thing. And given the media blitz that has accompanied New Moon, it’s rather unsurprising.

I was expecting more intensity between Bella and Edward after the reunion… And why is Eward dressed so “correctly” all the time? Why are most Americans so afraid of romantic scenes but not of violence?… I´m still looking forward to Eclipse and I hope Breaking Dawn will be a movie (or two)…

I agree with Mary in regards to the fact that I was frusterated that they dropped from the movie some of the intimacy between Bella and Edward at the end of the Volturi scene and before they got back to Forks. They should have spent more time overall with the Volturi part of the movie. That being said I still really enjoyed the movie and was in no way dissapointed with the overall production!!

Besides the 3 items mentioned above, I loved the movie and I will see it again! And to all the twilight haters I just say: why don´t they spend their “precious” time with something else? When I don´t like a book or a movie I just ignore it…
