Defining Eclipse Review

Jun 2nd, 2010 | By | Category: Book News, Featured Articles

It’s a fact of life most of us have to face sometime, the dreaded SAT!   I almost hate to broach the subject, since the school year is finally coming to an end, and your thoughts are no doubt on hanging out with your friends and avoiding homework at all costs.  But what if studying for these tests could be easier, and not only that, actually help us relate to something we love?  That’s what Brian Leaf has done yet again, this time with Defining Eclipse, a vocabulary workbook for unlocking the SAT, ACT, GED, and SSAT.

As with Leaf’s previous prep books (Defining Twilight and Defining New Moon), Defining Eclipse let’s the reader integrate their copy of Stephenie Meyer’s Eclipse to help complete the vocabulary lessons.  Lessons are divided into groups of words found in Eclipse, with the corresponding page number located next to each vocabulary term.  By looking up the page number in your copy of Eclipse you can then read the context the word is used in and write it in your Defining Eclipse workbook.  The answers for these terms are given to the reader at the end of each group sheet, along with quizzes at the end of each section.  Readers also receive reading practice by completing sections on synonyms, analogies, and sentence completion.

My favorite parts of Defining Eclipse are the definitions at the end of each group sheet, in which Leaf uses pop culture references to help readers retain the meaning of each term.  On page 18 ‘pensively’ is described in relation to the pensieve in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.  Other pop culture references used throughout the book invoke Family Guy, Lady Gaga, One Tree Hill, Lord of the Rings, and The Simpsons.  Brian Leaf’s Defining Eclipse makes studying for these T.E.S.T.S. (you know the ones) so much more enjoyable and engaging.

Be sure to pick up your copy in stores and online today!  You can also find more information of Brian Leaf’s series of books here at his website.
