Just a piece of paper. That's what I thought too before I actually married my husband. We have known each other almost 40 years, have been together 35 and married for 29. We lived together before getting married, though we were engaged, and I didn't see the necessity of that piece of paper. When we finally set a date and it arrived, oh the feeling as we stood there before God and our witnesses! We looked at each other with love through our tears and I was overwhelmed with the realization that he loved me and only me and wanted to be with me and I with him forever. My best friend and lover was now my husband and was totally committed to making our relationship last. As I look back, I would definitely not live with him before marriage because what if he had chosen to walk away when I had given him something I could never get back? How would I ever explain that to a different man? But God blessed me with a good man that honors his committments as I honor mine to him. That's what real love is; supporting one another, serving one another and helping each other be the best you can be. The physical love is just the icing on the cake and is well worth the wait when you find the right man. Don't settle, but also remember that there is no "perfect" man out there just as your are not "perfect". Take care and be strong.

Heya!

I love these interviews. Stephenie, right now you're the coolest/nicest author out there that I know of. Keep up the nice-ness. ^_^

I like the whole "Marriage before sex"-thing.
It's alright to wish for freedom and it's alright to want to sleep with a person without being engaged to the person, but if you want this person to stay around for at least a while and spend most nights in your bed then you pretty much have the marriage deal. The big differences are that if you marry the person you have to 1) forget sleeping with others, 2) sign a document, and 3) throw a party.
It's just another excuse to party if you like parties and could be quiet and small if that's what you like, so I don't really see the problem. About #1; no-one, and I mean no-one, is ever going to let infidelity and two-timing (not to mention three-timing++) slide. #2 is something a lot of couples living together do anyway just to make sure your partner can't sue away your things when you break up and they leave, and #3, as mentioned, is a choice.

I just can't see any problems...

Yeah, I guess I'm an "Edward", but still...

I don't mean this as pure preaching, but this is a really big question to me; What's the big difference between marriage and living together as a couple?
A document?
Then... why on earth doesn't every couple have one?
The document very simply states "This is my guy/girl! Hands off, vultures!". Isn't that what everyone wish to say about their lovers?

I'm confused and I'm 17. Yes, I am saving myself. Yes, I have dated. Yes, I share Rosalie's dream of love and children. Yes, I am way ahead of myself, and I know it. :P

But if anyone out there could give me an answer that actually makes sense I would be thrilled.
NB! Impatience is NOT a reason because, believe it or not, a quiet wedding can be arranged within three hours, including a room for the newlyweds. It's all but a phonecall away. -_-

PS: Sorry, people. I was carried away. ^_^;
I do by no means mean to offend. ^-^;

Meant it or not...As a 30-year old virgin waiting for my "forever" man, it was validating and inspiring that Edward wanted to wait until marriage (no matter his motivations). I don't think it is an "outdated" concept, I think our world has been in caos because we think usng sexuality at any age or time is "freedom". Oops, sorry...didn't mean to take this post in that direction. Thank you guys for posting all of these wonderful transcripts!!!!
