Seriously though….what if they did something for like age brackets (Best picture for ages 13-18, 18-25, etc…) or something like Best Pop Culture Phenomenon. That or they need to get some new blood in the academy.

At the 50th annual academy awards (for movies in 1977) Star Wars was nominated for multiple categories (and won) such as score, costume design, art/set decoration, editing, sound, and visual effects. They were nominated for best screenplay as well as BEST PICTURE but did not win.

Now think about it……..the Academy of Motion Picture Films and Science is predominantly older white males…now 30+ years ago when more of those now older, white, males were younger, white, males they probably thought that Star Wars what a pretty hot thing. Now don’t get me wrong I love Star Wars as much as the next dork that is secure in their own skin. The point is, that movie appealed to the audience that made up the mass majority of the Academy so therefor it won accolades. “Oscar voters are nearly 94% Caucasian and 77% male, The Times found. Blacks are about 2% of the academy, and Latinos are less than 2%. Oscar voters have a median age of 62, the study showed. People younger than 50 constitute just 14% of the membership.” (LA Times http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/movies/academy/la-et-unmasking-oscar-academy-project-html,0,7473284.htmlstory)

Why do you think “The King’s Speech” won out over “Social Network”?????

Now, I LOVE all things Twilight….I will geek out on that all day long and I will challenge any of my friends to a trivia contest and kick their booties; but I am also not going to say that in the grand scheme of things they are the best movies of all time (even though in my head they are). But for Pete’s sake, give credit where credit is due. In my opinion BD1 should have AT LEAST been nominated for visual effects (seriously with all of the stuff Lola did with KS making her look like she just walked out of a concentration camp, and all of the wolf work that has been done), score, and adapted screenplay.

Voting is way to subjective to have such an imbalance in the academy so they either need to recruit new, younger, more diverse members or force the ones that are there to think outside the box with new categories.

Thanks for listening to my rant! lol, I’ll get off my soapbox now 🙂
