Will Jeff Buckley Biopic Include Rob?

Jun 4th, 2009 | By Krystal | Category: Featured Articles, Movie News

It seems that the much-talked-about Jeff Buckley biopic might finally see the light of day!  Now comes the hard part: who will play Jeff in the adaptation of “Dream Brother?”  (Great book, I highly recommend it!)  Rob wants the role and is included in the short list of possible leads, which also includes James Franco, James Marsden, and Jared Leto.  While I love Rob, I actually think Franco is better fitted to the role.  What do you guys think?  I’m really interested in hearing your opinions!

“As Jeff Buckley fanatics likely already know, a biopic on the late singer-songwriter has been brewing for years. Several attempts have been made — one even by Brad Pitt — but so far Buckley’s mother Mary Guibert has put the kibosh on bringing the Buckley tale to the big screen. (To read a detailed history on the failed biopic check out The Playlist’s post about it here.) However, via a report from the Australian press, it appears the film is back on track and could be out as early as 2010.

According to the report, Orian Williams, who produced the biopic Control, about Joy Division’s Ian Curtis, is onboard for the Buckley film, titled Mystery White Boy, as is screenwriter Ryan Jaffe (The Rocker). The real juice here is that the list of possible actors that may play Buckley, which includes names like Jared Leto, James Franco, Robert Pattinson and James Marsden.”

  1. Sarah says:

I think that would be brilliant. James Franco has already played James Dean and now he’s playing Allen Ginsberg. How many biopics can one actor do.
We know Rob is a great singer and he is a hot commodity right now.

  2. Rosalyn says:

Of course, I would like to see Rob tackle the part but James Franco resembles him more.

  3. Elliot says:

I agree with you, Rosalyn, James Franco could beBuckley’s doppelganger, but, as I love to point out to everyone I know and it’s grating on everyones nerves already – I know that Rob definitely has THE VOICE….listen to Hallelujah and compare it to Rob’s singing….you will notice how similar the voices are!
….can James Franco even sing…? I mean, I love him, but…it’s not about looking the part, but singing also….

  4. Michy. says:

    JAMES FRANCO!! sorry Rob!

  5. Judith Akufo says:

James Franco is a dead ringer, sorry Rob

  6. probabaly the second biggest twilight freak in the world says:

have u seen jeff buckleys album cover of hallelujah? rob looks exactly like that! and robs sings amazingly and im sure he could sing b#more like jeff if he wanted to and also i think rob acts ore like jeff than james does and how many biopics can james do!? like someone up there said.
jared leto would be good but he doesnt look alot like him.
i just think rob has all the factors to be jeff and hes so hot for films at the moment he wold just be perfect!

  7. my-personal-brand-of-heroin says:

rob has got the right style of voice its so soulful
its more than just the right looks

  8. Taryn says:

Let Rob have a crack at it! Who else would understand sudden fame so well? This is what the movie will focus on people & all the weirdness that must come with that. Plus, let us not forget the passion required to play Jeff.I don’t see James Franco doing Jeff much justice(although he is an amazing actor) I just think something more magical would come out of Rob for some reason…like it is a role meant for him. He may not exactly look like Jeff but I’m just saying, there’s something there.

  9. haylie says:

james franco has jeff buckley eyes. its almost ridiculous.

  10. Kel says:

As much as I love Rob, I think James Franco is more appropriate for the role. As for James Marsden and Jared Leto, they’re both in their mid-30′s and Buckley died at age 30. Maybe Rob would be good for a secondary role, if the film gets made. Just my opinion.

  11. mooster says:

Jeff Buckley will shudder in his grave if this film gets off the ground. No one should play Jeff. Jeff already did that. Pity his mother’s so greedy. She’ll probably cast RPattz just to get the dollars from all those millions of twifans who’ve never heard of (or heard) her son. Face it, if RPattz’s cast the film will be a blockbuster despite how fucking awful it is. Jeff hated the internet, he hated being tracked like Rob is being, he hated all the li’l girls that chased after him when he was alive (much like RPattz) and he would HATE that this film is being made at all. Shame on his mother.

  12. a singer’s POV on this,
plus: sound examples of them both for you to judge:

  13. krittenslurv says:

I think James Franco and Robert Pattinson are both fantastic actors and I adore both of them…
I think Franco looks more like Buckley, but Rob is a musician…I’d have to hear them both singing Buckley songs to really form
    an opinion

  14. krittenslurv says:

p.s. mooster-I think his mom knows him better than you do…I think a film is a great idea if it’s well made…
it will bring a whole new generation of buckley fans like walk the line did for johnny cash…
and rpattz really is a good actor.. don’t just judge him on twilight. Watch How To Be. It’s a fantastic indie british film. Trust me, it’s worth it.

  15. Kasey says:

I think the choice is obvious. Buckley was never one for mainstream. Pattison might be able to sing, but let’s be honest, who can sing like Buckley? Franco is a dead ringer, and an extremely talented actor. Also, I’m fairly certain Jeff might vomit at the idea of “the Twilight guy” playing his life story! I find it hard to believe the hardcore Buckley fans would ever support Pattison, the only people who would come see the movie would be teenage Twilight fans.

  16. Matt says:

Why can’t a unknown like myself play Jeff Buckley? Being that Jeff was so close to cracking the big time but never really quite got there for eg no one really knew who he was until all of the press and media coverage surrounding his death and the use of ‘Hallejuah’ in several circles of film and television.

I’ve spoken a few times over the years with Mary Guibert about his music and doing the Buckley tribute shows for 11 years now in Sydney, Australia.

If you need the proof, watch the vid… mind you, not the best version I’ve ever done but hey, chop the hair off my head and my chin… I’ve already lost the weight lol… what do you think?? I leave it for you lovely people to decide…

  17. killdozer says:

mooster: “Pity his mother’s so greedy.”

FUCK you. his mother was very reluctant to agree to the movie. and it really doesn’t matter what jeff would have thought anyway. he’s dead. and if it’s a terrible movie the world will go on, just like it does when every other shitty movie about famous people comes out. it won’t hurt for people who care about his legacy to try making a film about him and if it’s bad it won’t affect the fact that he was one of the greatest musicians ever. you know what probably WOULD make jeff shudder in his grave? someone TALKING SHIT ABOUT HIS MOTHER.

  18. Harry says:

Ben Whishaw should pplay Jeff Buckley. That’d sort it so it’s not a shit film. He’d be great & very true to what happened.

  19. Samantha says:

    No. No. Absolutely no.
If they cast Robert Pattinson, they might as well send it straight to DVD…and then put it in the bargain bin.
Let’s have a little respect for Jeff, please?
I would love it if a complete unknown were to get the role. I’ve always thought that if you cast a big name in a movie, you’re focusing on the actor and not the character.
Now it’s fine to cast these “hot commodities” in movies aimed towards a younger audience, because that’s what will draw them in. But for Jeff’s audience, that’s not gonna work. I think it will have the opposite effect.
They need to create a really honest film, which reflects his life without all the “tortured soul” crap.
