Grandmom Monday: Twilight Time with Grandmom Part 1!

Aug 15th, 2011 | By | Category: Fandom, Featured Articles, Videos

We have a new feature here at TST called “Grandmom Monday”! Each Monday for the next five weeks, I’ll be posting interviews I, Stefanie, did with my grandmother, Becky. Now, why in the heck are we doing this, you ask? Because my grandmother has just finished reading the entire Twilight series and we thought it’d be cool to get a grandmother’s perspective on the Twilight series! Yep, she’s a newbie and I wanted to catch her intial reactions to all things Twilight. So fasten your seatbelts because for the next few weeks you’re going to get to see the Twilight world through a grandma’s eyes!

In this first part, we discuss her thoughts on Twilight. Here’s a sample of the questions I asked her in this first video: Since it’s okay for Edward, a 100-year-old, to date a 17-year-old would she date a 17-year-old?! Does she think it’s creepy that Edward watches Bella sleep?

So, question for y’all: has your grandma read the Twilight series?!

I cannot wait to find out what she thinks of Eclipse and Breaking Dawn since both have things in there that are controversial among fans of the saga. Those will be great interviews! I hope she is asked about the imprinting and Jacob in general. My mom reads and loves the saga, but my grandmother does not. She is still too hung up on the fact that it is about vampires and she has this image in her mind about what that entails. I have tried to explain these are not your typical vampires and that I have never been a fan of vampires…..the main reason I did not want to read the books at first….but she does not care. She is not a cool grandma though.

A friend of mine’s grandmother is like that. She adamantly refuses to back down, and they won’t even really talk about it in front of her anymore–it causes too much tension! I was really surprised by my grandmother’s reaction to the series as a whole. I can’t wait till y’all see the other videos! Each one is better than the last!

There seems to be a stigma around the saga and I think that is why she is against it as well. It is all based on ignorance though. The things she is worried about, biting, blood, tons of sex, are things that are not huge parts of the books like in other vampire books. I think now it is a pride thing. She is afraid to read them because if she actually liked them, she would have to admit she is wrong about them. My mom was hesitant at first but trusted me enough to know that if I enjoyed them, they must be pretty good. She has been in love with Edward ever since.

Cool grandma! I can’t get some of my 30-something year old friends past the ‘vampire’ thing! I’d love to hear more about how she feels about it and what she likes. Can you ask her what her favorite part in each book is? Also, I’d love to know what she thinks about the dream in NM where Bella dreams she is her gran. Does your gran think Bella could have lived with her 17 y.o vampire boyfriend as a human? Imagine the cover stories the Cullens would have had to come up with for that one! Ewww! X

    • Stefanie says:

Aw man! I wish I’d thought to ask that stuff–especially about Bella’s dream in New Moon. We’ve already recorded all the videos. Sorry 🙁

Hey now, I am the gramma here! Love Twilight Saga books and movies! On my 7th time reading them. Patiently waiting for Midnight Sun, hopefully in my lifetime! I get the children, grandchildren, nieces, great nephews, etc. together for midnight premiers. We wait in line for hours, bring games, do Twilight trivia with prizes! Great fun! Loving every minute of Twilight in my life!

    • Rachelle says:

Now that is awesome. I would love to be able to do stuff like that with my family members. My mom is into the books and likes to go see the movies with me, but that is where it ends. I am way more obsessed than she is though.

That’s awesome! My grandmother and I talk about midnight premieres in one of the upcoming videos. 😉
