Hot Topic Event Canceled in San Francisco

Here is a report of what went down with fans and police at the Twilight Hot Topic tour in San Francisco:

“SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — Police in San Francisco had to struggle to control a crowd of around 3,000 people who gathered at San Francisco’s Stonestown Galleria Monday morning for the chance to see an actor who is very popular among the teenage set.

Police were forced to cancel the event, after the crowds grew out of control.

Teenagers, and their families had come from as far as Hawaii, Los Angeles and Arizona hoping to get a glimpse of Robert Pattinson, the 22-year-old British actor who played Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter movies. He now stars in “Twilight,” a vampire movie that is based on a very popular young adult book.

Around 200 to 500 people were expected to line up this morning to buy a wristband when the mall opened, that would allow them back inside the mall at 6 p.m. for a t-shirt signing at the Hot Topic store. Thousands showed up.

”After I got trampled I got back up there, but it was really scary cause I couldn’t breathe, because everyone kept pushing,” said fan Erica Martin.

One girl reportedly had her nose broken as a result of being crushed up against the front doors to the mall. Another girl fainted because she was unable to breathe while being pressed by the crowd.

The line to get into the front of the mall stretched all the way around the block.”

You can see Twilighters.org’s videos of the event chaos here. Yikes!

There is also another report featuring the crowd here.

Let’s hope the rest of the tour is more peaceful!

it was insane!!! i was there at 5 am this morning! the crowd was already ridiculously huge! my friend and i decided to leave! it was crazy!! im glad i didnt miss anything!

  2. Pearl says:

Oh my gosh thats CRAZY!! Twilight fanz at that event need to have more respect, I think their needs to be some Twilight fan ettiquette, as a Twilight fan myself I find it emabarassing that people are acting that way. How are they going to make the rest of the series into a movie if girls cant even controll themselves?? Rob just might not want to make New Moon if its this crazy! I feel bad for those who came all the way from different states and waist their money for nothing.
Get a hold of yourselves Twilighters, that is just embarassing for the fandom.

  3. Ash says:

I this is just really sad. I can’t stand being apart of a fandom when people go and act like this… i mean, wtf? Seriously? The need to push and shove to get inside comes about how? What were these people going to do if they actually got in the store, rob the place? I feel so bad, and so sorry for those people who got hurt. And i can’t help but feel just as bad for the fans who were simply calm and waiting. I was apart of the Backstreet Boys fandom back in the day and remember the crowds and the mass…just craziness…that came about from even MTV appearences. Who ever is in charge of guarding these actors…they need to step it up…because if it was like this when it was just Pattinson, and he wasn’t even there yet? I mean, really, people, be careful. This thing is only going to get more crazy by the second.

  4. Kim Kelley says:

There is NO REASON for people to act like this!

  5. Jamie says:

Do people think all the cities are going to be like that??? I’m planning to be at the Boston one around th eopening time. I didn’t think there would be a ton of people, but now I’m not sure. I’m hoping I’ll get there in time for a wristband, otherwise I’ll be sad… 🙁

  6. Cynthia says:

    Wow.
Is it terrible that I laughed at first? (Not at people getting hurt) I just thought it was completely ridiculous that they would have to cancel a Twilight event. I realize we have a huge fandom and all but the thought of 5000 people showing up for an event is absurd. This sounds more like a report from a Black Friday shopping event than a celebrity appearance.

  7. Shteff! says:

That…is just completely out of order.
Yeps, I laughed over all…but a girl got her nose broken? That’s just lame. SERIOUSLY, not to be rude, but some people are taking the “fan girl” thing over the top :-S

  8. Amanda says:

see this is why people make fun of fangirls
i am a huge twilighter and so are many girls i know
    but seriously
    have SOME dignity
scream all you want ( i would) but dont ACTUALLY break body parts just to see this poor guy
and dont worry shteff, it’s not rude to tell people that

  9. Amanda says:

Yeah there is really no reason for those fans to have acted like that. Now everyone is going to think that all Twilighters are just crazy ridiculous fangirls and that’s not all of us. I mean, seriously guys?? Come on. You’re representing the fandom when you go to an event like that and that just reflects really badly on all of us. Have some dignity people. I was actually planning on driving from school in Baton Rouge to either Dallas tomorrow or back home to Houston on Thursday but now I’m not so sure I wanna go and possibly subject myself to something like that. I’m sure there are some fans that will have learned nothing from this and will do the same exact thing in the other cities and that’s just sad to me.

  10. Kelly says:

Oh my! Its great no one was seriously hurt! Poor fans, and Rob Pattinson!
Be careful if any of you plan to attend these events and let us know how things go!

  11. Meghan says:

I feel really really bad for Robert Pattinson. He’s already kind of afraid of his fans and doesn’t seem to get why everyone likes him. Now he is supposed to show up at event and people are litterally breaking each other’s noses to try and see him. Everyone needs to calm down and stop scaring him. He is going to think that all of his fans are nuts if we all don’t act respectful at the events. I know its hard to remain calm when hes around bc he’s so gorgeous but really, come on. I’m sure he would respond better if everyone didn’t run and scream at him all the time.

  12. SeeTheUnseen93 says:

This is utterly ridiculous. I understand having fun, going to a signing, and being obsessed in a fun way, but when a girls nose gets broken that is unacceptable.

  13. Erin(: says:

HOLY CROW!!!!!!!! THAT IS AMAZING!and still very very very bad! See how awsome all the twilight fans are! OMJ! THAT ROCKS!!!!!

  14. TW says:

You know what they should of had police and some kind of barrier in the front ! BAD MANAGEMENT !!!! 200 TO 500 ? Ok you must not know the TWILIGHT FANBASE !!!!

  15. Vivi says:

Are you sure its cancelled because robert was just on a San Francisco show and said its not cancelled he is going to be there.

  16. danielle says:

the signing is back on!!!! After majority of the people left after being told the event had been cancelled, many people stated to purchase the twilight tour t-shirt. After purchasing the shirt, customers were given a wristband so they can come back to redeem the poster. When I came back at 4pm, hot topic was happy to announce that rob will be doing the meet and greet after all but the Q&A, as of right now 7:20pm, is still cancelled! I hope everyone who stayed was able to get a wristband!

  17. angelica says:

    that sucks.
i didnt know it was canceled, and the shirts, wristbands got sold out at like 4 or whatever, but i saw like 5 seconds of robert 😀
