Question of the Week ~ Show Some Pride…
May 17th, 2008 | By Kallieross | Category: Question of the Week
…and Prejudice! This week we will be discussing the correlations between Twilight and the classic, Pride and Prejudice! Our question for you is…
Do you think Twilight parallels Pride and Prejudice? Why, or why not?
Hehe I had to go reread Pride and Prejudice just for this.
Pride and Prejudice main focus points were on family live back in the 19th centry, expectations of daughters like the need to marry which for the most part wasn’t out of love.
I tried to find some parallels between the two (wonderful I might add) books. Elizabeth does seem like Bella (except for the Bella’s knack for falling), very well read and very oppinionated. Mr. Darcy is very stiff, like Edward. Though in P&P the differences between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy are due to social ranks (Elizabeth is far pour than Darcy), you can compare the social rankings of them to how Edward is far…”superior” than Bella, having everything and able to go everything.
The plots have nothing in common, but the lead characters are very much similar.
Anyways, must go read Twilight to my mummy.
Huggles,
Nollie
love your podcast im 16 and hate doing laudry and cleaning my room.Your podcast help me make folding cloths more enjoyable.
i believe the books are simliar as to their main characters. Bella and Lizzie are each very strong women who know what they want but can be blinded sometimes. Like when Lizzie meets Mr Wickham and miss judges Mr Darcy by Mr Wickham acusations and then several other acusations. But finds that he is a good person just like Bella finds that Edward is a good loving *”Vampire”*. When in twilight Jacab and Billy warn Bella a few times to stay away from Edward and knows herself what Edward could be capable of. She doesn’t listen to Jacods warning or Billy’s or her own or even Edwards for that matter and is blinded by her love for Edward to think of the dangers of being with him. Though we all know Edward would never hurt her and that Edward and Bella have dicuss there being together and it’s dangers.
Both Characters are relatible as to the fact that the character are not perfect and can sometimes be blinded just like everyone else.
I think the biggest similarity between the two stories is the initial intrigue that surrounds the male lead. You want to dislike him for his behavior, but something about him causes you to yearn for more information. The silent, brooding, mysterious male always draws us ladies in!
I would say that both Darcy and Edward, when looking at their future ladies for the first time, found nothing out of the ordinary. Darcy hardly notices Elizabeth, and Midnight Sun tells us that Edward sees Bella as nothing more than an ordinary girl. However, the more they are exposed to these extraordinary girls, the more the men discover their beauty. And then they are powerless to resist, despite differences in status or species. 🙂
Both Bella and Elizabeth carry with them a sort of strength, but their reactions to their men are a little different. Elizabeth despises Darcy at first, while Bella clearly has always been drawn in by Edward.
And the final difference – I can’t decide who I love more – Darcy or Edward!!!!
One of the major themes in pride and prejudice is ‘first impressions’. I think i read somewhere that jane austen originally penned that as the book’s title (apologies if i stand corrected).
NOTE – THIS POST HAS SPOILERS FOR PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, JUST IN CASE!!!
Lizzie and Darcy form opinions of each other based on their own prejudices. I see the same theme in twilight. Bella and LIzzie’s first impressions of their leading man is one of intrigue. This is quickly followed by loathing and frustration based on the actions of the man – Darcy’s rejection of Lizzie at the ball and Edward’s rejection of Bella in class. Although Darcy and Edward’s motivation for the snub are obviously quite different, the parallel is there from the woman’s point of view.
Both men are seen as unattainable by the ladies and both find it hard to understand why they are so special in their eyes – at first, LIzzie finds it hard to believe Darcy would marry someone below his social standing and Bella is constantly second guessing Edward’s interest in her because she’s so ordinary.
Also, in the end, both men save the day. Darcy saves Lizzie and her family from social ruin, which would be similar to death in those days and Edward saves Bella from James.
I wouldn’t say Twilight totally parallels P&P, but I do see where Stephenie Meyer got her inspiration from.
I think Pride and Prejudice is quite similar to Twilight, one of the similarities would probably be Mr Darcy’s inetended marriage to Lady Catherine De Burg’s daughter – just like Edward’s intended match Rosalie.
Edward keeps to himself but has a strong character – like Mr Darcy, Edward also has similar riches and looks, and in the end a gentlemanly manner.
Like Mr Darcy at first he does not hide his dislike for Bella/Elizabeth.
Bella thinks herself rather ordinary – like Elizabeth, she is independent and has a very strong mind. I suppose Wikham/Mike is the person everyone thought she would end up with. Although Mike does not have the horrible quality Wikham seems to possess.
But i don’t think Pride and Prejudice matches Twilight for the meaning of family. The family bonds are completley different to that in Twilight. (I suppose Georgiana Darcy is much alike Alice)
Apart from Edward/Mr Darcy’s connection with his sister – Alice/Georgiana, and Bella’s/Elizabeth’s connection with her father.
If i had to choose between Edward or Mr Darcy it would probably be Edward!
I LOVE that these two books are being compared!!! Both are amazing, and two of my all-time FAVORITES 🙂 I know both extremely well, so hopefully I can answer this well for you guys!
I can see both the similarities and the differences. Let’s start with the similarities between Edward and Mr. Darcy: they’re both stand-offish and unsocial before their female counterparts arrive in their lives. When Bella first arrives at Forks and wonders about the Cullens (Edward in particular), Jessica tells her that no one is good enough for Edward Cullen to date. In the same way, in the beginning of Pride and Prejudice, Mr. Darcy is overheard telling Mr. Bingley that no girl present at the ball was pretty enough “to tempt” him, particularly Elizabeth. Elizabeth overhears Mr. Darcy calling Elizabeth “tolerable”. This causes her to hold a grudge against him. In the beginning of Twilight, Bella honestly thinks that Edward is going to murder her or something. I think that this causes her to have even more interest in Edward rather than hold a grudge against him, like Elizabeth did against Mr. Darcy, which shows the difference in their sense of pride.
Here’s where I think that Edward and Mr. Darcy are different – Mr. Darcy’s greatest fault is his pride, and the prejudice caused by his pride. Edward’s greatest fault, on the other hand, is just his desire to drink blood. which is something that can’t be helped or changed. His other greatest fault, in my opinion, is just that he doesn’t freakin tell Bella anything – but he does this out of love, and I guess it’s pretty understandable, and he IS getting better about it. So I guess the the biggest difference between the two, for me, is that Jane Austen created a dreamy, but realistic man, whereas Stephenie Meyer created a man literally out of her dreams – one who’s greatest fault is that he is too perfect for reality.
Now to compare Elizabeth and Bella! Honestly, I like Elizabeth better. I think that Elizabeth is more independent than Bella is. Bella fully relies on Edward – her mom observes as much. Elizabeth, on the other hand, doesn’t rely on Mr. Darcy at ALL. He helps her and her family out, and his help is much appreciated, but she doesn’t NEED him and she’s perfectly willing to live without the protection that he offers her, in the form of wealth and status. Bella, on the other hand, would die without Edward and his vampirism at this point. She REALLY, actually NEEDS him. And she can’t wait to hop on the vampire bandwagon, and she literally NEEDS to in order to survive from the Volturi! So that’s where I think they’re different.
As for the story as a whole, Pride and Prejudice is about how letting personal faults be important can deny something really great, like true love. This is where Twilight and Pride and Prejudice are really similar, because Twilight is also about that, only the personal faults in question are totally separate things. With Pride and Prejudice, the faults in question are pride and prejudice and the connection between the two. With Twilight, its being a vampire and a human and the difference between the two and the problems a relationship between the two can cause. But Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy’s love overcome their pride and prejudice, and so far, Edward and Bella’s love has overcome that whole human/vampire thing as well. Even though its come into question a few times, it’ll eventually be resolved… or at least it BETTER!
At first, I really didn’t see the connections between these two books! I was seriously going to get on here and be like “Ya’ll are crazy!”. But now that I’ve thought about it, there are some similarities!
There are two major plotlines that stick out in my head that parallel New Moon and Eclipse – the Twilight parallels having been mentioned in the comments already!
One of them is the marriage proposal from Mr. Collins, whom Elizabeth, of course, refuses. Mr. Collins being one of Mr. Bennet’s cousins, this marriage was, of course, highly encouraged by the family. I think this (and the events that occur because of this) ties in with the Jacob-Bella relationship. After all, we all know that Charlie would have Bella marry Jacob rather than Edward any day.
The second is Mr. Darcy’s two marriage proposals. The first time, though Mr. Darcy obviously has endless affection for Elizabeth, he admits that asking him to marry her is “against his own will”, as could be said in Edward’s case. The second time comes only after Mr. Darcy has been given hope (by way of Lady Catherine’s conversation with Elizabeth) that if he proposes again, there is a significant chance that she will accept, which proves true in the end.
While I don’t think Pride and Prejudice is a complete and total outline for Twilight, I think that Stephenie definitely took some aspects of it and made it her own. I think that there are some other books which serve as more of a parallel for the series – which I’ve already sent in about.
=D
I think the books are only vaguely similar.
I think the characters have similar characteristics but I’m not so sure that the plots are paralleling all that much.
I feel that if the plots totally paralleled then we wouldn’t have a story to read, just a story that is practically the same as another, filled with different characters.
hmmm….(i wont have a good answer for this)…maybe a little…i think it does because Jane Ausent (sorry i dont know how to spell it) is one of Stephiene’s favorite authors….also i think its funny cause i was watching Mansfield Park the other day and i thought the whole Edmund- Edward thing (which was pointed out in Twilight) was kinda weirdly funny!
They may not seem alike at first glance, but if you think about it for a while you can see some strong similarities. Bella doesn’t want to like Edward at the beginning of Twilight, but she can’t help but be attracted to him, just like Lizzie and Mr. Darcy. She can’t help but imagine herself with him, but won’t admit it at first because of her pride. Because Bella does have both pride and prejudice, but I think that Lizzie handles her pride and prejudices better than Bella. Lizzie is more independent, and doesn’t turn to others for everything, which is one of Bella’s weak points– she can’t seem to make important decisions for herself.
There is also the relationship of Lizzie and Mr. Wickham that is somewhat similar to Bella and Jacob. Lizzie likes Mr. Wickham, maybe even loves him, but doesn’t know what kind of person he is– she just assumes he is a good man. The bond between Bella and Jacob is deeper, and as much as I hate to admit it, Jacob isn’t a crook like Mr. Wickham. Lizzie could be with Wickham for the rest of her life and be fine, but it wouldn’t be the same as it would with Mr. Darcy, the true love of her life. It’s the same with Bella and Jacob– Bella knows she could marry Jacob and have a good life, but Edward would be the face she saw when she went to sleep every night.
Also, there is a strong similarity between Edward and Mr. Darcy, both in looks and personality. They are both handsome, tall, and make every woman in the room blush. They are both intelligent, wealthy, and quiet. They seem indifferent and haughty at the beginning of the stories, but once we get to know them, we find that it’s not arrogance, but something deeper, that makes them the way they are. They both seem to think that they aren’t right for the girl they love– Edward is more open about this, but I think Mr. Darcy sometimes feels the same way. Also, both Edward and Mr. Darcy only care about one thing in the world– the loves of their lives.
There are differences, too. In Twilight, it takes Bella and Edward a day alone to say they love each other. Pride and Prejudice takes place over a much longer period of time, and Lizzie and Darcy never even kiss. The level of affection is much different, but part of that has to do with the time period the books were written in. There is also the element of secrecy– Lizzie doesn’t tell anyone about her love for Mr. Darcy, and neither does Bella for Edward. They talk about their guys, but there isn’t anyone that really understands the level of love they have for them.
In Pride and Prejudice, Lizzie is never in mortal danger. She never has an entire vampire army on her tail, and doesn’t have to worry about her family’s safety. On the other end, Bella never has to worry about her family’s financial security in the future and how her choices could affect that. She doesn’t have to worry about her sister marrying an idiot, and never has to seriously worry about Edward ending up with someone else.
Stephenie Meyer is a great author who knows how to incorporate classic elements into her stories. I don’t think she set out to write a novel just like Pride and Prejudice, but she definitely added some subtle similarities.
P.S.
Thanks for such a great question of the week– these are two of my favorite books of all time!
I have never read Pride and Predjudice but I believe Twilight is a story that couldn’t be compared to anyother, It would be like comparing apples to oranges. Twilight is it’s own story,
I didn’t notice at first but the similarities between the two books is uncanny, yet, the books are so different.
I think that Bella and Lizzie are very alike. They are both opinionated, both independent. I think Bellas actions with her mother remind me of Lizzie watching over her sisters (mainly Lydia). Bella really was not all about her family at first, she resented Charlie (Like Lizzie resents her mothers behavior) for living in forks. But, after awhile and in New Moon, and mainly Eclipse, Bellas whole turmoil is about family, as is Lizzies.
Darcy and Edward both have prejudices. Darcy toward Lizzies inferiority (excuse the spelling) and Edward toward Bellas smell luring him in. I think they both do not want to fall in love with them at first. But, they both pull them in. They both express their undying love for the ladies, in one way or another and they both are very intruiging (of course, I think we all know who might be the slightest bit more interesting. wink wink :))Anyway, Both Darcy and Edward suck the readers in, we want to go back and read it again and again, trying to find out why they are the way they are.
So, I hope I didn’t bore you all to death. I was extremeley happy with this question because Pride and Prejudice is my all-time fav movie (for now). I can recite the whole movie to the end. yeah I know your thinking ummm…ocd. Ha ha anyway great book, great movie watch love it analyze it. You’ll be surprised if you read in between the lines.
Well there are many similarities between the characters, and a few between the plots. Elizabeth and Bella are pretty similar, both strong women, although Elizabeth is a bit more spunky and cutting.
The really nice similarity is between Darcy and Edward. Darcy and Edward are both stiff, though Edward is not so stiff as to dislike dancing, as Darcy does. They are also both “dream men” in their respective stories, Edward as the buff and kind and beautiful vampire, and Darcy as the handsome and well-off gentleman.
As a Jacob hater, I also have to put in that Jacob reminds me of a combination between Wickham and Mr. Collins. Jacob’s trying to convince Bella to stay away from Edward is reminiscent if Wickham’s warnings about Mr. Darcy. Jacob is also like Mr. Collins in that he never seems to stop pursuing Bella, just as Mr. Collins has to be rebuffed multiple times by Elizabeth before he will leave her alone. Jacob is just as tactless as Mr. Collins as well. Bella also likes Jacob just as Elizabeth liked Wickham, but I can only hope Bella has finally realized the error of her ways and will maintain a terse relationship with Jacob as Elizabeth did with Wickham.
The relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth is similar to that of Bella and Edward because they both challenge societal norms. Darcy and Elizabeth are from different classes, and Edward and Bella are, well,…Edward is a vampire, so that challenges the societal norm as well.
As to the rest of the plot, though there are also major differences. Unless you want to view Rosalie as a sort of Lady Catherine, there really is no one on Edward’s side trying to push Edward and Bella apart like Lady Catherine.
Elizabeth also dislikes Darcy for much of Pride and Prejudice, and this is not the case in twilight. However, there are many parallels in these two books.
As someone who has been in a theater production of Pride and Prejudice, as Mr. Collins, and who loves the Twilight books, I absolutely loved this question of the week. Keep up the great work!
ok I have one difference and I could be wrong because I cant exactly remember.
Bella wishes so much to be like Edward, to be as beautiful, strong, smart, and unworldly. But, does Liz really want to be like Darcy. I think that is the one flaw with Bella. She is a little unsure of herself. Although that doesn’t have to be a flaw. Isnt that life. The future isnt set in stone, you have to be unsure sometimes. And Liz is an adult, 21 or 22. Bella is 17 and 18. Every teenager looks at themselves negativley sometime. But, I don’t dwell on it. No one needs to. We are who we are.
In the romantic aspect they do. In P&P, at first Darcy despises Elizabeth but he is still drawn to her even though there are all these objections against her. In Twiliight, Edward despises Bella because of how she could be the one to very well destroy everything that his family has made. From what we can see in Midnight Sun, we know that he completely hated her for being there and smelling so delicious to him.
In P&P, Darcy insults Elizabeth and she hates him for it and that fact he is arrogant and stuck up doesn’t help the matter either… This goes along with the idea that Bella ultimately didn’t like Edward because she thought he hated her and despised her. She thought that his whole family was kind of stuck up because they never really interacted with the people around them.
I guess you could say the love between the middle class and the social class is similar to the love between human a and a vampire… both unethical and frowned upon. But in the ends of both books they all get over there prides and prejudices to end up loving each other. Two unlikely matches…
first, i wanted to mention something about the authors. i was watching “becoming jane” (which is about jane austen in case u didn’t know) with my friend and we noticed that it was very much like the plot line of pride and prejudice.i realized stephenie kind of wrote from her experiences, so her and jane are kind of alike in that way.
second, elizabeth is very stubborn just like bella. elizabeth also isn’t a girly-girl and neither is bella since bella doesn’t gossip like jessica and isn’t obsessed with her looks.
third, mr.darcy hates elizabeth at first (so it seems) and then falls in love with her.
and lastly, elizabeth’s and mr.darcy’s romance seems impossible at first but they made work and its impossibly sweet like bedwella’s love.
(o yeah) p.s. edward and mr.darcy are both REALLY hot
bi!
o the mr.darcy being hot only applies to the second movie(sry)
I haven’t read Pride and Prejudice, but I will go watch the film tonight as my mum has it on Dvd. I have to say I love the Twilight books, and I have always thought Edward was definately better than Jacob, but, the last line from Eclipse never fails to make me cry. I think it’s because you grow to love Jacob, in the end. Espically, when he tries to say that he loves her the most. Anyways, going to try and find P&P, will comment again afterwards 🙂
Ok, I love this question of the week! Twilight and Pride and Prejudice are two of my favorite books!
I think the stories have certain similarities, mostly between the main characters.
Elizabeth and Bella are two strong female characters; they are independent, opinionated and witty and they are always thinking of others; they care a lot about their families. Also, at first Bella and Elizabeth think that the male character hates them for no apparent reason (only to find out later that they are really deeply in love with them!).
As for the male characters, both Edward and Mr. Darcy are reserved and mysterious. They may come of as cold and arrogant to those who don’t really know them, but are loved and cherish by those who know them well.
Another parallel is that, at first, neither Mr. Darcy nor Edward (as described in Midnight Sun) find anything special about the female characters, but once they get to know them they become attracted to them.
Also, Mr. Darcy and Edward decide to be with them against their better judgment (Edward shouldn’t be with Bella because he might kill her, and Darcy thinks he shouldn’t be with Elizabeth because they are from different social classes). They both struggle against the desire to be with them but finally cave in.
And of course, the main similarity between them is that both Mr. Darcy and Edward are every girl’s dream!
Well, that’s all I can think of for now.
Love the podcast, can’t wait to hear your answers!
I just love comparing with my two obsessions : Darcy and Edward!
they just both stole my heart!
I think the main similarities, being so mysterious and sex gods!
Just the word Darcy made my heart flutter… but since I’ve read Twilight, it’s Edward that does it for me.
In P&P, Darcy fell in love with Elizabeth against his “better judgement.” He knew he shouldn’t because of who he was. Edward felt horrible for falling for Bella.. he DEFINITELY shouldn’t have. But lucky for us.. both he and Darcy unwillingly fell in love.
I really like the clever the connection between Elizabeth and Bella. Like how headstrong Elizabeth was – very opinionated, stubbornly never backed down, and how “head strong” Bella was.. like how no one can penetrate into her mind, and powers of the mind don’t affect her at all.
And of course as a whole. Both relationships were forbidden. Oh, and Bella had people pinning over her at school like Elizabeth had with Mr. Collins… God I hated that man. But yes both women end up being with the least likeliest of people. I love it!
Reading the two novels doesn’t immediately make the similarities stick out. Love and adventure.. however strong and exciting.. are the foundation of a good story for me. Jane Austen was a brilliant writer full of imagination.. and it makes sense for Stephenie Meyer, having Austen as a favourite author, to enjoy writing about what she enjoys reading.
i really think they have a few things in common. as a matter of fact, twilight and Pride and Prejudice were one of the first few books i read when i came to america. Been from Peru was not a very fun thing to do for a while so i started to read the books that some of my new friends suggested. my favourite by far was Twilght of course, and even im a boy, i couldnt stop talking about this book with my other friends that read it too. at the end, these two books have alot in common because Bella and lizzy for example are people that know how to get what they want, even though sometimes they can be tricked. i hope youliked my answer.
Sincerly
diego
P.S: sorry for any misspelled word, im still learning english (lol)
In the most basic sense, yes, they do parallel. Both protagonists have strong, decided characters and at first sight they hate each other. As the novels progress, fate throws the couples together time and time again. Eventually, they find themselves passionately and hopelessly in love. Obviously, they are two different books and so naturally they cannot parallel perfectly.
Hannah
P.S. I think that it’s really funny that the “inspiration book” is always mentioned by Bella. Kind of a clever way to allude to the parallel.
Actually, I’ve never read/seen Pride and Predujice so I…don’t have an answer. I just thought I’d write in to show my support! =) Keep up the good work!
I do think that pride and prejudice and Twilight have some things in common. One example is that Elizabeth and Bella are very independent women and they do what they feel is right. They both fall complitely in love. They also have a distine, for example Elizabeth always found Darcy eveywhere she went and it wasn’t intentional, Bella did not had a boyfriend back home until she move to forks and she also cross paths with Edward everywher she went like in the office when Edward wanted to changed classes or even having biology together. Also Darcy starts to all complitely in love with Elizabeth once he gets to see the real side of her. Edward also starts to fall complitely in love with Bella. I do think that this two amaizing stories have many things in common and thank god for this womens that have and amaizing imagination because with out their creativity i would not be able to survive does moments of sadnes or just boring times!!!
Sure there are some similarities. Some of the over riding themes are constant in both books, like love and family. But I really think that Pride and Prejudice is more of a Cinderella story while Twilight relates more to Romeo and Juliet, or Wuthering Heights. That’s why Stephenie has those two novels in her books. In all three of those books, the main characters make a selfish decsion to be together no matter the consequeces to those around them. While I like the characters of Edward and Bella, I think it’s safe to say they are being selfish in what they’re about to do in their love for each other.
But the thing is, I don’t think Stephenie is like Austen in the fact that she can’t write a book that doesn’t have a happy ending. If Twilight was the end of the series like it was supposed to be, then Edward and Bella would have ended up happily ever after. So I think the long conflict that’s been drawn out between the sequels will come to a happy end, with Edward and Bella being the best of friends with Alice and Jasper just like the end of P&P.
First off i would like to say this is not fair. The one week i pluck up the courage to send in my thoughts and opionins and its on a movie which i haven’t seen in forever. Its okay though, i have vampire’s recall. I’m going to make this quick and easy. The only relartionship i see between mr.darcy and elizabeth and edward and bella is that both woman are plain and independent and both men are considerably handsome. In pride and predjudice the relationship they have is more of a love/hate one. In twilight both characters are head over heals for eachother, and not to proud to show it. In the end though, what really matters is that they love eachother.
Ok, I’ll admit it, I haven’t finished Pride and Predice yet. I tried, really, but I’m not done yet. I have seen 2 different movies though (including the one that’s like 5 hours long) so I no the plot.
I see some similarities between the beggining of the 2 books. They both start with Mr. Darcy/Edward meeting Elizabeth/Bella in a crowded setting and Mr. Darcy/Edward kinda-sorta hate Elizabeth/Bella right away, even thought they are expected to at least show some intrest in them. On the other hand, I don’t think the main characters are very similar. Bella and Elizabeth both have that quite I’d-rather-be-reading thing going on and Edward and Mr. Darcy both have that well-actually-I-don’t-want-to-chat thing.
Hope that made some sense.
Pride and Prejudice is my fave book/movie, so i have to be nice about it.
For characters:
Elizabeth–duh, Bella. leading lady first strongly diliking lead guy, retaliating his hatred
Mr. Darcy–[might i comment that darcy is the sexiest last name ever] edward, another duh. he “hates” her at first.
but neither of them can explain why the other hates each other. so they fall in love.
Collins–Tyler. He has no real affection for bella–he is empty. He is only the way he is to make up for almost killing her as collins is collins b/c the bennetts need their property in good hands.
Wickham– Jessica. She is using bella to get to Mike, pretending to be who she is not.
Anegela/Alice would be a good Jane.
Rosealie/Lauren would be Charlotte
Mike, being a popular person, could be Mr. Bingly.
Charlie is Mr. Bennett, i guess.
most of the secondary characters are stretches, depending on where in the book u are.
I just love Pride & Predjudice and think that you can find parallels to the theme of the book in practically any book that you read. There will always be that “first impression” and having to work through what you thought someone was like and getting to know what they really are like.
Bella first thought that Edward didn’t like her because of his looks and even his status (could tell that he was “above” everyone else but not for the reasons most of the students at FHS thought). They tried to ignore their initial attractions to each other but in the end, gave in and let love show them the way.
No, I think it parralles Romeo and Juliet
especially in New Moon, when Edward thinks Bella is dead and goes to kill himself, if he did die, Bella would have probably also killed herself. Total Romeo and Juliet!
There are two similarities that I noticed between Twilight and Pride and Prejudice. But let me begin by saying that I’ve never read the book. I took the easy way out. I read the sparknotes. There are two themes in P&P that I noticed in Twilight as well.
First, there is the idea of a love that is so extraordinary that the characters do not think twice about overcoming huge obstacles to keep it safe. Edward overcomes his instinct, goes against his family, and fights a tracker to love Bella. Bella repeatedly ignores Edward’s warning,s “What if I’m not the superhero?” and finds herself in his cold, amazing arms.
Next, both books’ plots advance during the “journey”. The biggest revelations and the most action packed sequences do not happen in the high school or in forks. They happen on the way home from Port Angeles, in the Meadow, and on the chase that takes them from the clearing to Phoenix.
yes, when Bella first sees Edward she is curious and asks about him, just as Elizabeth is curious about Mr. Darcy. Bella and Edward’s relationship starts out very rocky, just like Liz and Darcy. Edward, from Bella’s perspective, is completely rude and mean when they first meet in bio. just like liz’s repulsion to darcy’s arrogance
pride and prejudice and twilight are compleetely diferent one is about a woman living in 18th century england who dosent agree with the notions of marage at the time where twilight bella agrees that the marege is a good idea but not while they are so young . Twilight is about more of a love at first sight thing were as in pride and prejudice it is more of a people grow on eachother another difernce is alice wholely aproves of bella but Miss darcy has a problem with elizabeth at first .
Yes, Twilight and Pride and Prejudice are similar, but only in some ways. At the beginning, Mr. Darcy completely ignores Elizabeth, just like Edward ignores Bella. When they finally start talking, their remarks are smart, or sarcastic. Also, Elizabeth, just like Bella, doesn’t have a ton of money, while Mr. Darcy, like Edward, does. Furthermore, Mr. Darcy’s sister becomes instant friends with Elizabeth. Alice becomes instant friends with Bella.
OOOOOH, as i was listening to this podcast, I came up with another reason why Twilight and Pride and Prejudice are alike!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mr. Darcy/Edward has to propose to Elizabeth/Bella multiple times before they say yes!
