So, what couple from Twilight do you think is most like Romeo & Juliet? And why?   Let’s think…

Edward & Bella?

Mike & Jessica… (Nahhhh!)

  1. Alexandra Landers says:

The most obvious one is Bedward/Juliemo. In the word’s off Edward, the odd’s are always against them. Everything that could go wrong does, or is waiting overhead. Both female’s would die to be with the male (Bella giving up her human life and Juliet drinking the potion).

  2. Amy says:

I’m going to go with the obvious choice of Bella and Edward for several reasons…but at least since I’m one the first to comment I’ll sound semi-original…

    1) Romeo totally lacks in moderation- everything is all or nothing, much like Edward. Even Edward’s family members comment on his tendency to overreact and go to extremes. I think it is because both Edward and Romeo are very intense and seem to feel things very deeply. It’s the intensity of those feelings that cause them to behave the way they do, such pursuing a “forbidden” love and orchestrating (or at least attempting to orchestrate) their own deaths.

    2) I think the similarities between Juliet and Bella are a little clearer in Twilight because at the beginning of Romeo & Juliet, Juliet is young, innocent and kind of naïve. Bella is kind of the same at first in Twilight but in the end they both show an intensity of character and love resulting in their resolve to stay with the one they truly love.

    3) The real similarities between Bella & Edward and Romeo & Juliet really become quite obvious towards the end of New Moon. Bad luck is on their side (even Edward notes that the odds are stacked against them when he’s in Bella’s room after returning to Forks): Romeo never gets the letter from Friar Lawrence and mistakenly believes Juliet to be dead, just as Edward mistakenly believes Bella is dead. This sets suicide plans in motion for both Romeo and Edward. However, Romeo unfortunately didn’t have an Alice to see what he was planning and try to intervene (lucky Edward and lucky us). Finally, when Juliet awakens to find Romeo dead she chooses to take her own life, much like Bella seems to take solace in the idea that the Volturi will kill her if she is too late and Edward is already dead. I definitely think if that had Edward succeeded in his plan to have the Volturi destroy him, Bella would have embraced her impending doom.

    4) There are some other reasons why Edward & Bella are the equivalent of Romeo & Juliet that I guess I’ll touch on briefly…The most blatant is the whole star-crossed lovers theme. There’s also the fact that throughout the series of books (I know I’m getting a little sidetracked here) Charlie (Hello, Lady Capulet) tries to push Bella into a relationship (friendship and more) with Jacob, who is definitely the Twilight series’ version of Paris which Stephanie makes pretty clear in the book. In Romeo & Juliet, Juliet is encouraged to marry Paris because of his family ties and who he is, much like Charlie pushes Bella towards Jacob (too bad he doesn’t know Jacob’s a werewolf because that’d definitely get his panties in a bunch).

Wow, I went a little overboard with the parentheticals here.

Well that’s just my humble opinion…it’s been like 9 years since I read Romeo & Juliet so I’m going more off the movie (Yay Baz Luhrmann version) because I’ve seen that more recently.

  3. Sarah C. says:

The obvious answer is actually the wrong answer. Edward and Bella are nothing like Romeo and Juliet.

Edward is not like Romeo at all. Romeo was fickle and foolish. He loved Rosaline then decided that she didn’t do it for him so he switched over to Juliet. He knew her for ten minutes then decided that he was head over heels. Edward is not so foolhardy. He waited 100 years for the right one to come along and when she did he was devoted, unconditionally.

Bella is not like Juliet for the simple reason that she’s not an idiot. Juliet barely knew Romeo at all but was such a silly little girl that she was willing to believe in some hope that he truly, madly loved her. She believed whispered sweet.

Romeo and Juliet wasn’t a tragedy because the lovers died, it was a tragedy because they didn’t even die for love. They died for something far less worthy.

No one in Twilight is like Romeo and Juliet, they’re all far too intelligent.

  4. Kayla says:

I would definitely say Edward and Bella, because in case you haven’t realized, their story seems to be a different version of Romeo and Juliet in some ways. Like Bella being Pushed toward Jacob, just like Juliet being pursuaded into marrying Paris, and they would die for one another. literally, if the situation demands it. That is a definite similarity. The Boys both believed their women to be dead, and they both planned immediate suicides to escape the pain of living without them. So, it may be a bit biased just because they are the main characters in Twilight, but I really believe that Bella and Edward make the perfect Romeo and Juliet couple…

  5. Alexandra Landers says:

But, don’t you see? That’s exactly WHY they are simmilar. Regarding two of your points (the intelligent and the fickle & foolish), Edwards is Romeo. Even Edward admitted that he didn’t have any right to have Bella but he reached out and took her anway. He left her in New Moon which was the worst mistake in his very long life. Bella is like Juliet because she is willing to give up her human life for Edward. She’s ok with loosing Charlie & Renee + Jacob. If she was in the right then she would choose Jacob or at least corrected her mistakes whilst she still could. She wouldn’t have given so many wounds to Edward and caused pain for Jacob if she were wise. She would of left one of them before it was too late.

Even though, technically, Edward isn’t dead, he still has passed on from his human life. And Bella is preparing to die, thus making it a tragedy for Jacob, Charlie & Renee. And what did Romeo and Juliet die for then if it wasn’t love? Just like Edward did when he thought Bella (Juliet) was dead, Romeo killed himself because he wasn’t willing to live in a world where she didn’t exist. They are exactly like eachother.

  6. kirsty 15 Scotland says:

I think probably the most Obvious Twilight couple who rmind me of Romeo and Juliet are Edward and Bella

i think this because Both Edward and Romeo are seen as Outsiders to some extent, They dont really fit in much.

Also there is the Obvious dissaproval of Juliet/Bella’s father of his daughters choice of Man. Both fathers have another man in mind for their daughter. Charlie has never hidden his blatently obvious preference of Jacob just as Old Capulet does Paris.

Both Couples are very young when they fall in love, they are proof that “love at first sight” does actualy exist, both couples know that they will be spending the rest of their lives together (However long that may be.)

There is also the changes which you see in Juliet/Bella at the start they are both young and innocent this all changes after meeting Romeo/Edward

The couples both share the same sense of bad luck it seems as there is no escaping from death in R and J as the couple are fated to die from the start could this be where Breaking Dawn is headed?

The part which reminds me most of R and J is obviously the part in which Edward goes to Volterra , he knows just like Romeo does that he canot live without her

There have been many references throughout New moon to the tragic love story (And to quote : “Juliet gets dumped and ends up with Paris would never have been a hit”)

I really hope Breaking Dawn does not have the same ending! Sorry about the length of my answer i just wanted to try and fit in as much as i could

  7. Shalimar says:

It has to be Edward and Bella. They are from the two different households. She is from the human household and he is from the vampire. They are different and perfect for each other. Their love is also very powerful. One can’t exist without the other now that they have met. And when Edward hears that Bella is dead, he goes off to kill himself without checking it out for himself (classic Romeo).

  8. Kate says:

I honestly do not know. These arguments are both excellent, and both make sense! If I had to pick a side though, I would most likely choose that Edward and Bella do resemble Romeo and Juliet’s relationship. However, I also think that Alice and Jasper’s relationship could resemble it too.

Alice and Jasper’s relationship is as strong, and dare I say maybe even a little bit stronger than Edward and Bella’s. (Please no one kill me! I’m totally team Bedward!) Unlike Edward and Bella’s relationship, Alice and Jasper’s have no “PDA” sexuality in thier relationship. In New Moon when Edward, Bella, and Alice came back from Volterra, Alice did not run to embrace Jasper, she ran to him and they just stared into each others eyes. I mean, thats a TON more romance than there is in the whole Gossip Girl series.

I know that Alice and Jasper’s pesonalities do not parralel Romeo and Juliet’s perfectly, neither do Edward’s and Bella’s. However, their relationship does.

  9. kymesha says:

i had originally posted my answer elsewhere, but i’ve cleaned it up here.

I think that Rosalie and Emmett are a good Romeo and Juliet couple.

Emmett thinks of Rosalie as an angel, and says so many times. [I had to read Romeo and Juliet with my 7th grade ELA class this year, and distinctly remember R using the word angel/angelic about Juliet. Also, I think one of the film adaptations has wings of Juliet. o.O] He would die for her, but has not yet needed to.

Rosalie was originally intended by her biological parents to marry a wealthy, handsome buisiness man. But Rose saw that she would be unhappy that way, after seeing her friend Vera [oddly enough, R & J is in Verona] with a child.

    Royce=Paris

Then, when she was a vampire, Rose was intended by her “parents” to be with another handsome, perfect man. [or should I say vampire?] So in this case,

    Edward=Paris

Rosalie, like Emmett, would so anything for the other, including risk her life.

Another good example is Alice and Jasper.

The only reason that Jasper isn’t killing everyone in sight is because of Alice. He knows that she would be unhappy if Bella was dead b/c of him–like how Romeo killed Tybalt. They truly love each other, and have an almost visible relationship. [at least to Marcus]

Duh on Bella and Edward. No point in saying it. Too obvious to go into detail.

Carlisle/Esme…. I’m not sure. I can never truly see how much they love each other–but I know it’s there.

Ben/Angela… I know very little about them, so no comment.

Mike/Jessica no comment. I hope they die or something, though. I hope Bella kills them when she first turns, so that they have something related to R and J.

James and Victoria are also a pretty good example. Victoria tried to avenge Jame’s death instead of deliberately taking her own life–which it ultimately did. But they definitly had strong feelings for each other. Even if they were the bad guys.

A note about a qutoe from the book. If “Juliet gets dumped and ends up with Paris would hever be a hit” is true, then why do people like Jacob?

  10. Callie Cullen says:

I have a hard time seeing any couple as Romeo and Juliet other than Edward and Bella.
Using Bella’s analogy from New Moon: Jacob is like her Paris, except that she really does care about him, and he protects her *twitch twitch* (TEAM EDWARD). Edward and Bella= Romeo and Juliet because it is impossible for them to be together but they find a way anyways. They would do anything for eachother and they can’t live without eachother as proved in New Moon.

  11. May says:

We know the dynamics of Edward and Bella’s reltionship best, and I think that we’ve read time and again of them say to each other that they would have nothing to live for should the other die. They seem the most fitting couple that would compare to the legendary Shakespearean duo.
Although I have a feeling Jasper and Alice share something kind of similar…

  12. May says:

By the way, Amy (second comment) you rock! 😛
That’s the perfect answer. Genius 🙂

  13. Macie says:

Personally i dont like, or want to compare Edward and Bella or any Cullen couples to any other couple AT ALL! Edward,Bella,Alice,Jasper,Emse,Carlise,Emmett and Rosalie are all indiviaules! They are all so spectacular that they are amazing couples all by themselves!!! They dont need to be compared to anyone! So people are always saying that Romeo and Juliet are the most amazing couple of all time but they are just as awsome and just as in love as all the twilight couples! Just because they died because they didnt want to live without each other doesnt make them better than the twilight couples!!!!! Edward would die for Bella, Jasper would die for Alice, Emmett would die for Rosalie, and Carlise would die for Esme!!!!!!! and vice versa!! so i dont think they should be realated to anyone else!!!!!

  14. Bekah says:

I actually think that the couple most like romeo and juliet in the series is bella and jacob. (haha i can almost hear the boos from kassie) i know they’re not really a couple, but if you really think about it, it’s the two of them that are the star crossed lovers. The opposition in their relationship doesn’t have to do so much with their families as with their opposing worlds. She really does love him, and he loves her. But it seems as though the whole universe has played one big ironic joke on them by making things like vampires and ware wolves real. those are the capulets and the montagues of the twilight world.

but i’m still team edward. so sorry jacob. but i think the big ironic joke the universe played on you is actually kind of funny.

  15. Mirela says:

Bella and Edward. Over the course of the three books, they have been through what Romeo and Juliet have. It’s most… comparable.

  16. Amy says:

    Thanks May!

  17. Katie S. says:

Actually i wouldnt choose any of those! i personaly think it would be Jacob and Leah. Even though we dont know for sure if the end up together i think they will! Jacob is like Romeo in the way that he loved someone else but then switched over to someone else. Plus hes so foolish! Also Leah is kinda stupid. Like when she got too cocky and decided to attack the newborn alone but Jacob saved her. Plus i also have a theory that Jacob has imprinted on Leah at the end of the book but doesnt want to see her because he still likes Bella. They all need to save the drama for there Mamas! (Except Jacob, he can tell Billy about it!) I love this theory because that means Jacob and Bella wont be together BAHAHAHAHA!

    TEAM VAMPIRE!!!

  18. Gabby says:

Definally Edward and Bella because they would die for each other as they showed so many times, bella evencompared them to romeo and juliet because the situation with jacob where she is Juliet, Edward is Romeo, and Jacob is Paris, and bella’s dad doesnt approve of the relationship.

  19. CoCo says:

I think there are certain aspects of all the romantic relationships in Twilight that mirror that of Romeo and Juliet.
    For example:
    Rose and Emmett:
-Rosalie’s parents originally planned for her to marry a wealthy man (enter Royce) however that obviously didn’t work out and she is now with Emmett. Emmett views Rose as his angel which is the same way that Romeo feels about Juliet.
Bella and Edward (for obvious reasons):
-they are young like Romeo and Juliet were when they fell in love
    -would die for one another
-Bella and Edward come from very different families, like Romeo and Juliet
-while I feel they are meant to be, some view them as star crossed lovers like Romeo and Juliet
-Jacob is like Bella’s Paris except that she cares for him
***I think Jalice and Eslisle are both also a lot like Romeo and Juliet because of how strongly they all love each other***

  20. mattlyn says:

i know most people think jacob would be paris, but i think jacob would be romeo
Bella’s already stated that she’s with the vampires
And Jacob’s definatly with the were wolves
So the two of them being with eachother is just…bad
In this current situation edward’s like the father
telling bella she cannot be wtih jacob
    and bella tries sneaking away
Now beleive me, i’m team edward, but even i can’t hide the facts
    its just what i see

  21. Lauren says:

I think that Romeo and Juliet most resemble Victoria and James. When James dies, Victoria goes and avenges his death by ultimently dying herself.

  22. MkC says:

    Thats a good one Lauren!!!!
James and Victoria are alot like Romeo and Juilet!! but alot of people just see them as the bad guys!! but they were in love too!!!! but they were just kind of……? bad? so yea i guess they are pretty evil!!!

  23. Kylie says:

i hate to be unoriginal but… Edward and Bella.
they would do anything for one another, anything. the odds are always against them. and even though it never happened (thank god) edward was going to kill himself because- he thought- bella was dead. i mean hello that is so obvious.

i also think there is kind of a connection with bella’s window. edward always comes in her window and it reminds me of that famous scene on juliet’s balconey. (“romeo, romeo. where for art thou romeo?”). idk that may be stupid but think its significant.

none of those other couples(except maybe victoria and james) listed have sacrified quite as much as edwella has for each other. james and victoria don’t really represent romeo and juliet because even though victoria lost her life avenging him, she didn’t kill herself right then and there like juliet did and we all know bella would have.

  24. Jessica loves Edward says:

Wow, what a hard question! I don’t really think Edward and Bella are. It’s something I can’t explain for some reason. I think (and don’t make fun of me, I only know the basic story line of Romeo and Juliet) that Carlisle and Esme are most like Romeo and Juliet. I say this because they both try to kill themselves at one point, even though it wasn’t because they thought the other was dead, they didn’t know each other then. Esme jumps off a cliff after her baby dies, and Carlisle tries to destroy himself after he knew what he became. And they have such a strong bond 🙂

Sorry if this answer makes no sense, but it makes sense to me, lol.

  25. Lyllith C. Fon says:

Bella & Edward all the way!

Their realationship is just SO strong and meaningful to me! Nothing, no one, nobody could beet them out!!

    BELLA & EDWARD 4EVER!!

  26. Jackqulyn says:

I think that all the vampire couples are all star crossed lovers if you think about because they could not have each other in life but only in death.
Non of the characters would have found each other in their own time left to their predetermined fates.

Romeo and Juliette didn’t end up together in life but the hopeless romantics believe that they found each other in death even thought they would have gone to purgatory for committing suicide rather than heaven.

So aren’t all the vampires like Romeo and Juliette they found each other in death where they would not in life. Its just that in Edward and Bella’s case Bella is most like Juliette because she has a choice where none of the others did. This is assuming her change isn’t forced by some series of events

  27. Shannon says:

I think this answer will be obivious. It’s Bella and Edward. Even though they are not dead, yet, they have to struggle to keep their love. Jake is in the way. Like Paris was. Even though they don’t have to get married in secret and have feuding families, but its their love that kept them together. They died for each other. Romeo saw that Juilet was “dead” and decided to kill himself. Edward decided to kill himself when he found out that Bella was “dead” in a sense. They can’t live without eachother. Bella and Edward promised eachother that they would be together forever.

Romeo and Juilet didn’t have a choice. Juliet was chosen to marry Paris. Bella chose to kiss Jacob at the near end of Eclipse.

  28. marisa says:

I’m gonna go with Edward & Bella.

  29. Jess B. says:

I think all of the couples other than Ben & Angela and Mike & Jessica have elements of Romeo and Juliet in them. Romeo and Juliet fell in love at first sight and that is how things seem to happen with all of the vampire (and werewolf) couples. Romeo and Juliet cannot help falling in love with each other. This is very similar to how the vampire couples fall in love and to the process of imprinting. Even though the vampire (or werewolf) involved may know that they shouldn’t feel the way they do, they can’t help the way they feel. However, the similarities end there for most of the couples.

The only couple that I see any further Romeo and Juliet-like qualities with is Edward & Bella. They are similar to Romeo and Juliet because they come from two conflicting worlds. Vampires and humans are inherently enemies. However, there is a difference in the fact that there are no real family conflicts, whereas with Romeo and Juliet the main conflict was between the families. Charlie isn’t a big fan of Edward because of how Bella reacted when he left, but Charlie loves Alice and has no problems with the rest of the Cullen family. The Cullen family also obviously has no problems with Bella’s family because they go out of their way to make sure that Bella’s family stays safe.

Another similarity is that both Edward & Bella and Romeo & Juliet are willing to die for one another. While Edward & Bella are willing to die to keep each other safe, let’s hope that their story ends more happily than Romeo & Juliet’s.

  30. marisa says:

I’m a gonna go wit Bella & Edward because they are the shiz & the beez neez.

  31. Chloe says:

I am going to have to say Renne and Charlie. Even though niether of them are dead, their relationship was a short lived fling and it resulted in Bella. I also think this because Renee, before they got married, almost seemed like she teased Charlie, just like Juliet did to Romeo. Also both relationship ended in tragedy, Renee and Charlie in divorce court and both Romeo and Juliet dead, but this did not stop any of thier love. I think that, though they are no longer together, Renee and Charlie still care for each other deeply. (Even though Renee moved on to Paris ((aka Whats-his-name)))

  32. georgia says:

ok, so first of all, looove the podcast 🙂
now down to my theory. So the first thought that springs to mind is obviously, edward and bella, HOWEVER the romeo and juliet story is more about forbidden love then anything else. And i know this is crazy since Bella’s a human and Edward’s a vampire and their relationship may seem like it should be counted as forbidden, but Edward’s family and charlie and renee (sort of) all seem pretty accepting of the relationship, and thus it is not forbidden in the sense that romeo and juliet is with the whole family feud thing.

I believe the most romeo and juliet couple in twilight is Jacob and Bella. And i hate it since I’m an edward luver lol, but if you think about it, their relationship is essentially forbidden in the ways romeo and Juliet are. Jacob’s ‘family’ a.k.a his pack don’t want him to be with Bella, and Bella’s ‘Family’ a.k.a the vampires don’t want her to be with a werewolf. The two however still want to be together, even though they cannot.

The second part of my theory brings me to my Breaking Dawn theory. I won’t put the whole theory here, but the part i am speaking of is that i think that at the end of the story Bella will be dyeing and Jacob will sacrifice himself so Edward can save her by turning her into a vampire.
In Romeo and Juliet, the two lovers end up dead, which in Jacob’s case will mean real dead, and in Bella case will mean becoming a vampire.

Yes it’s all a little scrappy, but you get the idea 😉

  33. Jenniesmith says:

Okay so… I teach Romeo and Juliet every year and this year was even more special because I had already recruited students… or should I say converted students… into the Twilight realm!! Anywhoo… I proposed this question to my students (8th graders) and here are a few of the responses…

    Michaela wrote…
Edward Cullen and Bella Swan, of course. Besides the fact of Stephenie relation them to Romeo and Juliet… they are star-crossed lovers. They are the perfect couple that can’t be together, but are anyway. then, in New Moon after Edward leaves, Bella still sits around waiting for any word from him and then after hearing slightly of him goes after him. Both of them cannot stand being apart from each other for periods of time and their minds NEVER leave one another.

    Amber wrote…
Edward and Bella. They are not meant to be together just like Romeo and Juliet. But their love is so strong none of that matters so they stick it out through every obstacle.

    Vicki wrote…
    Edward and Bella
During and after New Moon- after Edward returns especially- Edward and Bella are a lot like Romeo and Juliet. For one, Stephenie Meyer makes a point of how they are through Bella. It’s almost like she is a Capulet and he is a Montague. Then of course there is Jacob, who as mentioned in the book, is like Paris. He wants Bella but she doesn’t really want him like that.

    Dreama wrote…
Emmett and Rosalie because it seems like when everyone else is going their seperate ways or splitting up their love prevails… Plus Rosalie saved Emmett… it’s just truly love.

Now… what does Mrs. Smith say….
I think that the concept of star crossed lovers matches best (of course) with Edward and Bella. They clearly aren’t supposed to be together. They are from opposite sides much like the Montagues and Capulets. Their love trumps over everything and makes them do CRAZY things that would normally be completely unacceptable (but come on… which one of us has never gone after the completely wrong guy and fall head over heals). When it comes to personalities though, Romeo and Edward are soooo far from each other. Edward is very grounded in what he believes in and he struggles with loving Bella in the beginning… yeah… Romeo doesn’t do that at all. He was just pining over Rosalie and then Juliet comes into play and BAMMM!!! He’s in love. Romeo is also very fickle and flighty. He changes his mind and does completely irrational things. Yes, Edward does the same in New Moon but that is after an extended period of suffering… not a week like in Romeo and Juliet. Bella and Juliet do have a lot in common because they are both so young (Juliet more so than Bella) but so mature at the same time. They are both caught between a war within their families and struggle as they are trying to find out who they are and fall madly in love at the same time. We know that they are both willing to die for each other also. Romeo and Juliet were the same way. They knew that no matter what their love was what mattered most.

Though there are differences (some major, some minor) I think that the overall concept of both Edward and Bella and Romeo and Juliet match.

Okay… enough rambling! Thanks for the podcast ladies!! YOU ROCK!

  34. Sarah C. says:

I see your point Amy but I still don’t agree.

Romeo and Juliet were two children more than they were star-crossed lovers. I suppose that people read Romeo and Juliet much differently than I do. I didn’t take away the idea of epic love, I took away from it the idea that children are foolish and rash when their emotions/hormones are involved.

I suppose it’s just my age letting itself be known.

  35. Amy says:

Sarah C., I can definitely see that interpretation of Romeo & Juliet and that’s actually the way I felt the first time I read it but after reading it a couple more times I changed my mind about it.

I think the way people answer this question is so heavily dependent on the way they interpret both stories so it’s interesting to see the variance in opinions.

  36. Christine says:

Has anyone else ever been told that Romeo and Juliet is meant to be a comedy? I thought this was really stupid first of all but then I started thinking about it, they are a young couple who meet, fall in love, separate and commit suicide in about a week – haven’t read it in a while so I don’t know the exact time sorry.

It is a kind of ridiculous story line and when you think about it although the story may be a tragedy to us that might not have been how Shakespeare intended it. When he was writing things like mental illness where funny (Ophelia – Hamlet), as might have been young naive love.

If Meyer knew and believed this then I wouldn’t think she would want Edward and Bella put under the same light as Romeo and Juliet. Some other couple with ridiculous attributes might be more suitable. Like Mike and Jessica (HA) or Bella and Jacob (who I hate, stupid Jacob).

I’m not denying however that there are similarities between Edward and Bella and Romeo and Juliet. I think it best to just go with the simplest option that Edward and Bella are the most like Romeo and Juliet.

  37. Andrea says:

Well, as of right now I think it would be Victoria and James. They both died for each other. I am excited for this question of the week becuase at school we just finished up this tragedy. Also, I think Bella and Edward could also be categorized. They have both said they would die for each other.

P.S. I love your podcast. It is the BOMB! Lol.

  38. kathryn says:

You know who reminds me of Romeo and Juliet?

Rosalies friend Vera and her husband!

i have no idea why but last week when kassie and kallie did their podcast and they spoke about the question this week, Vera and her husband (dont remember his name) just popped into my head!

I think the reason why (NOTE: i have not seen the movie or read the book of romeo and juliet so please correct me if i am wrong about the story)
but their love for each other is there but not visible to the people around them, like it is under the mat (my way of putting it :))
because Juliet is ment to marry Paris, and i am not sure if he knows that she loves another but…

    and the way rosalie says
“He kissed her when he thought i wasnt looking” just made me think of them!

    also another thing.

i red a summary on the internet about the story of R&J

and the way that edward goes off to the volturi to ‘commit suicide’ becuase he believes bella is dead, is like the way Romeo gets the posion after he hears the news that we later find out is not correct about Juliets death.

i hope that breaking dawn dus not end the same way tho! 🙁 it wud be to tragic and my small mind would not beable to take it in! 😀

i would probably have a heartatttack! lol

sorry about my rambling on but i had to say what i thought!

    kathyn X

  39. Chiara says:

I think as well.. almost everybody our favorite couple : Bedward!!!( that name cracks me up everytime = ) )
    Here are the reasons:
    * they would sacrifce their lives to save each other

I really think James and Victoria are the Romeo and Juliet. 1) because Victoria died avenging James and 2) because even though Edward tried to tell her James didn’t love her, Victoria still wantd to avenge him because she loved him. So since they loved eachother so much, and it showed that they’d die for each other, then I think they’d be a perfect Romeo and Juliet.

  41. Haley says:

I’ve never really considered James and Victoria as Romeo and Juliet before, but they kind of are in a way.

However, I honestly think Edward and Bella remain the true Romeo and Juliet.
Not only is their relationship forbidden, even if it’s not in the same aspect as Romeo and Juliet’s, but they also have fallen in love in the same way; they are both madly and almost obsessively in love with each other and they feel an instantaneous connection upon meeting. Even if their reactions to each other were negative at first, Bella obsessed over why Edward could hate her so much. And even when Edward tried to resist his budding relationship with Bella, he relented soon enough.
In New Moon it shows that their love and devotion for each other is so strong they can’t even think of doing anything other than dying at the thought of their other dying. In fact, what Edward does practically replicates Romeo’s death; he was given false information that Bella was dead and so went to get himself killed, though she was very much alive. If Bella had been a few moments late, he would have been as good as dead, himself, consequently leading to her true death, at her own hands.
The only difference is that their ending is happy, and other details. They’re kind of a would-be Romeo and Juliet. Except if Romeo were a vampire. And less of a shameless weepy coward…

  42. Jessie says:

I would definetly have to say edward and bell are most like romeo and juliet. Because of Alice’s vision Edward believes that Belaa is dead just like romeo thinks that Juliet is dead, Edward then goes to the Volturi trying to commit vampire suicide. Which makes him seem alot like Romeo. And I believe that if Edward had succeeded in getting killed Bella would have killed herself as well.

Like romeo and juliet. edward and bella dont think they are able to live without each other. Their lives mean nothing with out each other,

Also I think it is alike in that Romeo and Juliet fell in love with each other very quickly. What would seem likle to quickly for most poeple. I think it is different because romeo and juliet seem like their attraction was completly physical and edward and bella actually have the time to get to know each other and become an intelectual relationship.

Romeo and Juliet are considered star crossed lovers because they come from different social backgrounds and their families are supposed to be enimies. Edward and Bella are also from different backgrounds. They are two people who shouldnt be together but are, and they face many more difficult things than romeo and juliet.

I think they are very different in that Edward and Bella didnt end up killing themselves, and I think they will actually be together for the rest of eternity.

    SOO EASY!!!

  44. Emmets Lover says:

Okay so I’m just finishing studying R and J in English right now so this will be kinda fun for me. I would pick Emmet and Rosalie after Edward and Bella because Romeo and Juliet had a love at first sight thing and they loved eachother for their looks at first and later realized that they were meant to be. In Rosalie and Emmet’s case Rosalie fell in love with Emmet when she first saw him, pretty much for his looks and later they found out that they were perfect for eachother and meant to be. A cool fact about this couple is that Rosalie’s name has the same first two letters as Romeo (Ro), and Emmet has the same last two letters as Juliet (et).

ok, i think i can safely say that most of the comments on here state VERY CLEARLY that bedward (love that name- cuz thats where theyre goin!!) is the closest comparison to romeo and juliet. excuse me for disagreeing, but my answer has to be james and victoria… they really did die for eachother (ok, james died for his own selfish reasons, but victoria was his backup, and was probably willing to die for him!) – and in the end, victoria died to avenge james’ death, and, when we think about it, would edward kill bella’s murderer first? or would he kill himself? i have to say, even though i am the HUGEST bedward fan on the planet earth, that victoria really came up with a plan to get back at them for james’ death, and honestly, all edward would do is kill himself… what good would that do bella (assuming she could see him after she died) to see edward die? heaven wouldnt be all sparkling gardens and sunshine for bella , then. especially if edwards assumptions really are true and he has no soul… how would he reach her? pointless! so yeah, i think the closest comparison to romiet is jatoria! (sorry team bedward! u know im with you, but u gotta admit that is what edward would do! we have evidence!)

  46. Tori says:

    edward and bella 100%
they are like perfect for the role.
they would die together if it meant that they would be together forever.

  47. Diego says:

i think it is prtty obvious, Bedwella is definitely the most reasonable answer here. i think this be cause of the tragedy that can happen between the couples in these two books. in both, they pretty much talk about a forbidden love, something that goes against the people’sbeliefs (and by that of course, i mean everyone else.in both stories). Still, i think that romeo and julliet can be compared with all the couples in Twilight (exept on Mike and Jessica).
before i finish i just want to say that i love the couple name Bedwella because of the hidden meaning it has.(men i hope this actually happens).

  48. Diego says:

i forgot, i hope you guys like my name (Dee-a-go)
many people try to fool around with me by saying GO! Diego GO!. i just thought it woud be interesting to know for you guys

I agree with the fact that Bella and Edward are the obvious choice to compare to Romeo and Juliet, as far as major events in the stories go. I also think that their roles are switched in some ways, especially in their attitudes toward each other. I think that Edward is like Juliet in his maturity level in his relationship. Juliet and Edward are the ones who seem to keep their heads in their relationships to their significant others. While Romeo lives in the moment and is very impetuous (Bella), Juliet is the one that suggests marriage and leaves Romeo hanging when he comes to her balcony (Edward). Romeo (Bella) is more impulsive and doesn’t think about the outcome of his actions as thoroughly as Juliet (Edward). Juliet never had any interest in anyone else, just like Edward had never shown any interest in anyone but Bella. Romeo on the other hand, like Bella, loved someone else, but that love was only a fraction of what he felt for Juliet (Edward). (Did any of this make sense?)

There are several more details that are similar in both stories, such as the fact that both Romeo and Edward enter and leave their true loves’ home by way of a window in order to escape the wrath of the parents. Another similarity is that Romeo is banished from Verona for his behavior, while Edward implements a self-imposed banishment for the behavior of his family.

Whatever the similarities or differences in the literary couples, I still think that Edward and Bella’s relationship is much more healthy than the other star-crossed lovers because they have given it much more thought and significance.

  50. Josie says:

Well, it is pretty obvious that Bella and Edward are more like Romeo and Juliet and not just because their love is forbidden.
One thing that doesn’t make them like these classic characters is the fact that it wasn’t love at first sight. It started out as mere curiosity – Edward was curious as to why he couldn’t hear Bella’s thoughts and Bella was curious about Edward full stop. But their love is just as strong as any other. Another difference is that Bella isn’t 14 years old like Juliet. But there is a bit of an age difference between Romeo and Juliet, but it’s not as extreme as the gap between Bella and Edward (can you imagine a ninety-year-old Romeo?).

Out of all the books in the series, New Moon is the book that most seems to follow the plot line of Romeo and Juliet in the sense that Juliet aka Bella is thought to be dead when she isn’t, but Romeo aka Edward hears that she’s dead and tries to kill himself (but luckily, this has a happy ending as Bella stops him from stepping into the sunlight). And how Stephenie used the quotes from the play was clever I thought.

I agree with Christine that Romeo and Juliet is a comedy up until Mercutio’s death. The comedy dies with the comic character. Yet the full title of the play is “The Tragedie of Romeo and Juliet” (no I did not spell tragedy wrong, that’s how it’s spelt in the script that I have at home). And the play takes place over the space of four days. So thank God Bella and Edward haven’t rushed into things.

I can also see how Jacob is like Paris (now that I’ve performed a play that focussed on the story of Mercutio and Paris) – Paris really loved Juliet the way Jacob loves Bella, but he knew that she loved someone else (except Paris thought it was her cousin Tybalt which is why she ‘died’ after Romeo killed him).
And in a way, he is like Tybalt in the sense that Jacob wants to kill Edward because they are natural enemies, and Tybalt – a Capulet – wanted to kill Romeo because he is a Montague (that dared grate-crash a Capulet party). But it is Romeo who ends up killing Tybalt – could this happen in Breaking Dawn? (I do have a theory about that one.)

I agree with anyone else who has said that all of the vampire couples in Twilight have an essence of Romeo and Juliet. My reason is similar – their love for each other is a bond that can never be broken. Even with James and Victoria.
