Feb 23rd, 2009 | By | Category: Featured Articles, Movie News

Access Hollywood asked Kristen’s dad about why she didn’t present at the Oscars Sunday night and this is what he had to say:

“John responded that Kristen would present at the Oscars, “When it’s a great movie, not just one that makes a lot of money.”

  1. Hayley says:

I dont really know what this means….does she not think Twilight is a great movie?

  2. Lindsay says:

Makes sence tho. I mean i love twilight, however it’s not the greatest movie ever made. The movies nominated are mostly inspiring, well thought out, and have award winning actors that have already grown in the industry and are extremely talented. I think she thinks it’s just too soon for her to be at the Oscars when shes so young and has so much more to learn and grow as an actress.

    i dunno.. haha my thoughts.

  3. Janie says:

    She is really freaking unbelievable.

She and Rob should have been up there together representing the saga. There are 3 more movies coming out! Who turns down something like that?!?

You’re deep Kristen, we get it. But you missed a great opportunity and it may not knock again!

  4. Lindsay says:

it makes sense. props to her for wanting to keep it real- i guess. but how can she say that, supposedly, (since the comment came from her dad) after she had said in all those interviews before, making twilight was such an experience and she sincerely hoped everyone liked it and blah blah blah. her reason for declining almost seems like shes dissing twilight. and what does that say about rob? she should’ve done it because they asked her. that’s an honor in itself. how can you say no? obviously you were asked for a reason. regardless if the movie made a lot of money it made an impact and she should’ve accepted that great opportunity and stood onstage with her costar. especially since she’s so young too that’s a great honor. whatever. i like you kristen, but still… lol.

  5. Lexine says:

I think she’s just dissing the fact that a lot of the movies she may want to make will never see the light of day because of the sensationalism of Hollywood. It’s probably not got a lot to do with Twilight at all, just the media machine, and how Hollywood can eat up and spit out movies that they choose not to market. It’s also not coming from her mouth, so don’t shoot her yet! Maybe she’ll see that you can still make an artistic and social impact and make some money at the same time – but she’s young yet. Give her some time 🙂

  6. Shelly says:

    She’s such a bitch. Really.

That was really nice to do to Robert. She’s too good to attend, because apparently it would be selling out, because it’s just a big bucks film. Well Robert went, what the hell does that say about him? Way to go, Kbitch. Way to abandon your co-star, who put himself out there for YOUR film, who went alone to the Oscars to represent what you two did together, all while you’re putting it down and sitting on your butt at home. Robert flew in from England for that crap, and she can’t drive a couple cities over.

    Get over yourself, KStew.

She doesn’t deserve to be Bella.

She thinks Twilight sucked? I call for a recast.

  7. Angie says:

Hmmm, well, my take on this is that, one, her father is speaking here and not Kristen so we shouldn’t judge her too harshly forit, and I have a gut feeling the quote was taken a little bit out of context anyway since it’s only one sentence, although I don’t know that for sure, of course.

  8. Lyncoln says:

This is why I don’t particularly care for K. Stew. I mean, I think she’s a great actress and she made a great Bella, but she doesn’t seem to appreciate some of her work. Whether it’s a big money maker or not, you should be proud of all the films you make because really YOU chose to do it. They don’t force you to take the role. And it’s an honor to be chosen to be in movies such as Twilight and other great films. I’m so proud of Rob for accepting the invitation especially since it’s really not his thing. It’s shows what a great person he truly is. 🙂

Granted, Twilight isn’t an epic blockbuster and it did lack in certain areas, but it will always be a defining movie in her career. I don’t know…..

  9. ANiTA says:

    K. Stew i hope you learn to value how important twilight is for your career and how much it means to the twilight fans.
i just wish that you had the same passion and love for your role in the movie as the loves love the character Bella.
but i hope you undestand that your not the best actress i have ever seen.
so keep humble and appreciate the support that the twilight fans are giving you.
maybe someday you will be at the oscars but honey… you got a llllooonnnggg way to go!

  10. ANiTA says:

sorry second sentence is messed up……
i just wish you would have the exact passion and love for your role in twilight as the fans love the character bella!
learn to appreciate your roles and how much it means to the fans.
maybe with a little more of that you’ll be able to make a better Bella!

  11. Sia says:

I feel that Kristen is EMBARRASSED OF TWILIGHT and you know what the book was awesome and if they are embarrassed they should be for themselves BECAUSE THEY MESSED UP A BOOK THAT IS ADORED AND LOVED BY SO MANY !!!
I get the feeling Kristen thinks the books are immature and for little kids and she DOESN’T APPRECIATE THE BOOKS OR US AT ALL SORRY SHE DOESN’T !

That’s fine you don’t think it’s a great series but we DO SO DON’T RUIN IT FOR US !!! IT’S SAD SHE CAN’T BE HAPPY FOR THE MOVIE AND SHE’S NEVER HAPPY PERIOD. WHAT AM I TALKING ??
IT PISSES ME OFF THAT SHE THINKS SHE’S TOO GOOD AND THAT SHE’S BETTER THAN TWILIGHT.

YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR NOT 🙁

  12. kASS says:

It pissed me off that she looks down on us !
    Kristen-
High School Musical was worser and Zac and Vanessa showed up why BECAUSE THEY AT LEAST HAVE LOVE FOR THEIR FILM AND WHAT’S IT’S DONE FOR THEM !

I CAN’T STAND KRISTEN ANYMORE SHE THINKS SHE’S BETTER THAN US AND thinks were all crazy !
WE REALLY DON’T NEED THAT IN OUR FANDOM.

  13. Karen says:

I don’t thinks Kristen gave up presenting at the Oscars because she or her dad is ashamed of the movie.

Since the Oscars is where the most talented entertainers are honored in their field, I believe she (or her dad) wanted to be recognized for her acting in a movie, instead of being recognized as an actor in a successful movie franchise, where the protagnist could be substituted with any actor fitting the physical description of the role.

  14. Amanda says:

well honestly, i never thought it was the greatest movie ever, either. her performance in particular left something to be desired. i agree though, some of the looks she’s given to fans or when asked about twilight is the same that some people give at school when twilight is even mentioned. its one of those looks that says “that is a disgusting and wierd fandom and i am so glad i’m not a part of it”
she seriously does act like shes this mature person and looks down on us, the fans.
shes just like dakota fanning though; she may play different parts but they always find a way to make them similar ’cause they play it the same every time.

  15. natalie says:

I think that her dad isn’t making any references to twilight at all. I think that her dad was saying that kstew didn’t want to sensationalize and present a movie with an award just because it made a lot of money, so I think she was offered the chance to present a movie which she or her dad thought was mainly a money maker rather than a great movie. Everyone’s being really harsh on her.

  16. Skye says:

God She Is A Bitch! Jeezus! I Mean I Agree Some Of You Fans R Crazy But Like She Shouldnt Care!

  17. Mrs. Mike Newton says:

She Was Prolly Smokin Pot Lol

  18. systematichaphazard says:

To put it simply, Twilight is hardly oscar winning material, is it?

Nevertheless, shame on her for having such a bad attitude when it comes to Twilight. Weeks before its release in the UK she appeared on BBC for an interview. She lacked enthusiasm completely and looked as if she’d rather have been somewhere else.

  19. Lyncoln says:

Quite frankly, she’s lacked enthusiasm for the project since she was first given the role.

  20. Michy. says:

Twilight was good but not that good! not oscar worthy good. and i think kristen wants to be taken as a serious actress and not just known for twilight. its one thing to watch a movie and it’s another to be an actress. Twilight is Cool and made loads of money but did it get any oscars. the oscars is like a reward for ur hard work….like getting a bounus at work! but better. there are brilliant actors that have yet to win one and lets just say Twilight is not even close to slumdog millionare!

    just saying

  21. Kim says:

I think she is ridiculous. I don’t think it’s fair for her to be on her high horse about this. Not a worthy, thats absurd. I understand that it was not oscar material. Honestly how many films are. If you look at ones that are nominated they are quite deep and dramatic. Twilight was never a drama film. Never meant to be one. What ever. She lacks enthusiasm on most everything. She really doesn’t seem like she really has much of a personality anyways. Its hard to tell anything with her. Whatever floats your boat K-Stewart.

  22. Kati H. says:

ok dude, like chill out. you don’t even know her and you’re saying how she’s a bitch, doesn’t care about twilight at all, and totally turned her back on rob. ummm ok? granted, she’s not the type of celebrity that’s super comfortable in front of interviewers or any form of publicity, but her reactions in those situations where she’s clearly not in her element is no way to judge her. besides, the comment seems to mean kristen wants to be invited to the oscars b/c they respect her as an actress and think she’s done tremendous work, not just b/c she starred in one of the biggest blockbusters of the year. and whatever, that’s her decision, just like it was rob’s decision to present. she didn’t leave rob to hang out to dry or anything, she just made a decision that totallly goes along with her personality and the type of artist she wants to be, which isn’t one that thrives on winning awards. and it’s not like she was going around saying this comment to every reporter, it was something her DAD was specifically asked about and he answered. so just give her a break!!!!

  23. Kelly says:

Talk about biting the hand that feeds you, idk but it just seems to me that the professional way of handling this would be to be diplomatic about it without insulting your fans or dissing your current project. Given it was her father that said those things but it might as well come from her mouth, have your publicist give a statement with a lame excuse why you are declining to present at the oscars. If it wasn’t for twilight a lot of her other projects wouldn’t have taken off, from what I seen in Hollywood the best actors are those that stand behind their projects even if they know is not the best out there. Then maybe a few years after the project is done they might come out and mention how they thought that movie suck but you rarely hear an actor bad talk their movie while still working on them, is just unprofessional.

Personally I’ve seen a few of her movies and she has never impressed me as a good actress, she seems to always have the same lifeless expression.

  24. Michy. says:

but still it is an honour to present and she should of not taken it like that…

  25. Robby says:

Wow, I really don’t understand why people are so harsh towards Kristen. Damn (sorry for the language) I totally admire what she did and said (if that is what she really said, because this is from her father). Really, are fans THAT crazy enough to bash something/anyone who comes close to “dissing” Twilght? I love Twilight to death, but as some people have mentioned, the movie doesn’t really come close to “memorable awesome movie” list. The actors/actresses are great, and I love the book…but still…it’s not AWESOME.

I think Kristen has a right to have her own opinion, just because she has an opinion you don’t like doesn’t mean it’s reasonable for you to call her bitch bitch BITCH whenever you have the chance. I’m sorry guys, but I agree with Kristen on this….I’m really not liking how Twilight has become this big money making machine. Do I have to remind you of how Summit ALREADY have a release date for Eclipse? Come on! They haven’t even started filming New Moon!

In conclusion, YOU GO KRISTEN, you’re awesome 🙂

  26. zoe says:

why can’t she be enthusiastic for something

  27. Amy says:

She’s basically thinking (in a self-deprcating fashion) that she hasn’t proved herself that much of an actress: so why should she be in the company of real actors and actresses? She has to EARN that invitation to the Oscars.

Well, I agree, Kristen, because frankly, you haven’t shown that much talent. Not that I’m much of an actress myself, I find that I can say that in observing Kristen (in her movie roles), she display little or no emotion. She plays virtually the same character in every movie: the quiet, and misunderstood teenager. If you tried harder, Kristen (that is, actually showed EMOTION on your face), you would be proud of your work, proud enough to then accept your invitation to the Oscars.
Why should she show up to an event that praises excellences in acting…when she has not proven excellence herself?
Nope, you’re no Kate Winslet, Kristen.

  28. Marisa says:

Kristen is so awesome! She sounds so much like me. That is something I would say. I know how she feels. GO KRISTEN!

  29. Roxie says:

As far as I know Kristen loved TWILIGHT otherwire she wouldn’t have done it…all I can say is I support Kristen. She’s awsome!

  30. Elliot says:

maaayyyyy beee there is quite some misunderstanding here??
and even if this were her words – i’m with robby on this. twilight isn’t even close to “totally awesome movie evaaaa”… it’s like with the first lord of the rings-movie. they simply hadn’t the chance to put everything that belonged into it between the first and last minute. twilight lacks in the depth we had in the book and the story is, in my opinion, not one that can be put easily on screen. frankly, if they played out every scene like they should have been the movie would be pretty long and, i’m afraid, quite boring. bella and edward’s story is something that developes in glances, touches, in tiny littles steps, with the sweet breath that tickles the fine hairs on a cheek, with a touch so soft as a butterfly’s wing. it developes in endless talks about being evil and being a stupid lamb or a sick, masochistic lion. it’s about the question how much you sacrifice for your loved one and how much you can bear to demand from the one you love. it’s about the importance of family, real or adopted, of friends who are by your side no matter what. it’s about forgiveness. you don’t see much of that in the movie. and i missed that.
there are better movies than twilight. little gems that didn’t even make it into cinema (f.x. how to be *laughs*)

perhaps kristen is waiting for a movie like that, a little gem that contains all her heart’s blood and dedication, one she is proud to be in. i don’t believe she hates twilight. she may hate what it has become. twilight-mania. i for one wouldn’t like a movie very much that dictates probably my whole career from now on.

    GO KRISTEN!!!

  31. Emma says:

lol I think she hates Twilight because it’s not what she would term a “great” movie so why did she do it in the the first place andwhy sign up for the second movie? Money mayby? To constanly go on about how you hate the superficial world of Hollywood and then do a movie you dislike just for the money hmmm hypocrite much Kirsten? xxx

  32. anon says:

I understand her. She just wants to be proud of a movie that she acts in. Twilight wasn’t a good movie. She probably wants to be recognized for a serious role in a well made film. She didn’t abandon Robert. Both of them made thier own decisions about excepting the invite. She has alot of respect for other actors and might not feel adequite enough to be with them at the oscars.

I also think if she wants to achieve her goal of being oscar-worthy she has a long way to go. To me she isn’t that great of an actress. Not in twilight anyway.

  33. Jen Hamflett says:

I really like Kristen, but it doesn’t look good. I think she’s probably a little bit sick of all the Twilight attention she must get. And the idea of putting up with it for another 3 movies and risk being typecast can’t be appealing to her right now.

She’s probably trying to keep a healthy distance. I think she has a greater problem with typecasting than Rob – he’s just going to be a heart throb, and worth casting because he’s hot. She’s not portrayed as that so she has the harder battle to fight out of the series.

  34. Kaelin says:

First of all, that quote came from HER FATHER, not her! Secondly, too many people bash her as if they know her personally and it’s really unecessary. There is a difference between disliking her acting (which is fine, it’s your opinion) and calling her names and bashing her personality.

  35. The REAL Mrs. Edward Cullen says:

Purposely taken out of context, IMO. Reporters and journalists can manipulate quotes and what people say to get this kind of reaction out of the supposed “foam-at-the-mouth-crazy” Twilight fans, because thats really the opinion they have of anyone who claims to enjoy the series.

  36. Nicole says:

okay twilight was okay not amazing and definetly not oscar worthy the only reason why robert was there was so they could get younger people to watch it

  37. Becky says:

this is coming from her father so who knows if that was HER reason for not going. Also,Twilight is not the best movie, maybe the best book. However, i agree that she did miss out on a great oppurtunity to present at the Oscars.

  38. Shteff says:

She has got some nerve to be honest. Let’s be truthful, without Twilight she probably still wouldn’th be even known.
    Yeah, SHE WOULDN’T! *scowls*
    dumbass
    Xox

  39. Corwin says:

i think she missed a great opportunity to be at the oscars i dont care if the movie i made wasnt the best i would go and then i was invited to the oscars… just to be there would be amazing she lost a great opportunity and that is sad…. and i know this comment was from her dad but i would have said screw u and i would have gone…. that is what i think and just to let everyone know i am a male…. on the podcast they didnt know what sex i was but i am male….

  40. Jasmine says:

    KRISTEN IS PISSING ME OFF!
FIRST I FIND OUT SHE SMOKES NOW SHE KINDA DISSES OUR FANDOM?!!? WTAT THE HELL IS THIS!?!?! KRISTEN DON’T MAKE US TWILIGHTERS HATE YOU!!!!!!!!!

    Jazz (Team Cullen!)

  41. Cedar says:

what the heck? twilight IS a great movie!!!!! not the best of best but it is still a great movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. emily says:

what is she talking about it is an awsome movie it makes lots of money because it is sooooooo good

  43. emily says:

she doesnt smoke it is just a romour

  44. Emma says:

Sorry emily but I have seen loads of pics of her out and about with a ciggy so she does. and I don’t really care if she smokes or not I can’t judge anyone as I am a smoker it’s everyones personal choice. xxx

  45. Lori says:

OK, most of these comments are probably why Kristen Stewart is distancing herself from Twilight. Seriously, folks. I’ve seen the majority of Twilight fans do nothing but badmouth her since she got the role. She herself has talked about it in interviews, so she knows a section of Twilight fans dislike her in the role. Passionately dislike her. I’m not saying I’m her biggest fan, but I honestly don’t blame her. Put yourself in her shoes. Besides, she didn’t say this, and until I see a video of her father saying it complete with the rest of the conversation, I can’t judge her for it!

  46. Marissa says:

At first I was very angry. Then I calmed down and thought about a few things. Did Kristen even say that ? No, that was her father. Could that be taken out of context ?Absolutely. When did her dad said that ? He might have never said that at all. We all know that Kristen loves twilight ( thats what she says), she has said repeatedly that she only does movies that she is extremely passionate about. Did Kristen miss out on a very big oppurtunity? Yes, it might come around again but you never know.As twilight fans we should be hoping that Kristen does get to the Oscars again. We should be supporting Kristen’s decision(even if it was a bit foolish) and be thankful that Rob was there so we could have some representation. Was twilight an awesome movie?HECK YEAH! But ,unfortunately not the typical Oscar movie. I respect Kristens decision even if I disagree with it . (I would DEFINITELY not turn down a chance to go to the Oscars with Rob : P ) Everyone just calm down with the harsh language.

  47. Olivepankakes says:

I think she needs a good PR person because this girl is horrible about sticking her foot in her mouth.

  48. Lindsay says:

i cant believe everyone is so quick to judge someone… and analyzing such a small statement that could mean anything.. it doesnt mean that she is embarrassed or ashamed of the movie… and certainly doesnt mean that she’s a “bitch”.
No one knows what it’s like to be in her shoes except her…. (she may have wanted to spend as much time with her boyfriend before filming starts again… who knows!)
People need to stop judging someones personal life… especially someone they don’t even know.

  49. Lee Orlando says:

Olivepankakes has a good thought going here, I’m surprised any publicist didn’t have a stroke with this quote. And Kristen’s dad is in the business and really should know better and know anything to do with Twilight right now is *press-worthy*; therefore going to get picked up and replicated across the multiple media outlets around the globe!

Like or dislike Kristen, in a town that builds them up fast, and tears them down faster, you’d think that someone would have cautioned Team Kristen Stewart (Mom, Dad, the dog, etc. ) to at least keep that level of opinion to themselves.

We also don’t officially know if she was asked to present. At least, not that I read from a trusted trade paper as they kept this level of detail out of the public eye to add sizzle to the flagging ratings the Oscars have had over the last five years.

Still, even if Mr. Stewart was quoted out of context, which I’m hoping he was, as again, a working industry insider would know to put some type of positive spin on any comment made publicly. Actresses have a VERY finite shelf-life, much less than actors. As the Twilight Saga is paying his girl more money than most people working in the industry only dream of, you’d think speaking judiciously would be the first inclination. Foot in mouth indeed!

YMMV, but pretty unforgivable from Dad.

  50. Janie says:

Okay, if this didn’t jar you for whatever reason, then explain away her Nylon magazine comments about the stupid fan questions! Does she not realize that her fans will read/hear this stuff? And it’s not like this is the first time she has made these types of comments or acted rude.

Bottom line is she hates answering the fans questions and she snubbed the Oscars. The BIG DEAL that every actor wants to be a part of! She is a part of the Twi Saga and that is REALITY. If she is sooooooooo embarrassed about putting her face out there for it, she should back out now before she gets any more entrenched in it and let someone with some enthusiasm take the role.

As it sits now, she will be forever known as Bella Swan/Cullen by the time Breaking Dawn is done. She thinks she’s unhappy now???

Her PR is really going to have to spin this one!
