Shirtless Taylor: A Hollywood Double Standard?
Oct 30th, 2009 | By Krystal | Category: Featured Articles, Movie NewsYahoo! Movies has a new article comparing the double standards of semi-nude pictures of underage actors and actresses, which spotlights Taylor Lautner’s shirtless pics. Do you think there is a double standard? Where do you stand on the issue? We want to know your thoughts!
Now, with the premiere of his movie, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” less than a month away, magazines, websites, and TV are blanketed with images of 17-year-old star Taylor Lautner, shirtless and showing off the body he trained for months to perfect for the role. And yet, none of the cultural critics who turned Miley’s photos into a full-blown “scandal” have said a word about the sexualization of Taylor, who, at 17, is just two years older than Miley was during her “scandal” and is also a minor. So, does Hollywood have a double standard?
Interestingly, the biggest critic of these pervasive images seems to be Taylor himself, who said this week he hopes never to take his shirt off in a movie again, saying, “It’s so uncomfortable knowing that so many people are seeing pictures of me shirtless… It’s weird. It’s kind of embarrassing.”
I think that’s about the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Miley Cyrus was doing provocative poses in a photo shoot in an adult-targeted magazine, while Taylor Lautner is playing a role in a movie. She was selling herself, and he’s selling a character. Though both definitely fit in the category of having sex appeal, Miley could have done her photo shoot with her clothes on.

I think they’re pushing a little feminism. And it’s not going to work.
there is definatly a double standerd. miley’s photo wasnt sexual to me at all, it actually looked very pretty ( this coming from me who hates her). she wasnt even shirtless in the first place and there was a huge uproar. taylor’s 17 and hes got 40-something year old women saying how hot he is. if 40-something men commented on miley’s photo that way, they would be called pervs.
There is a Double Standard, I’m said to say. But Heathie does raise a very good point – Taylor is doing this for a role, whereas with Miley Cyrus was doing it in an adult-targeted magazine. But Summit is very much pressing the “Look at this Hunk!” a bit and we have to remember that he’s 17 years old and maybe Summit should do more to protect him from the media spotlight.
But I go off topic a bit!
I totally agree with comment #1.
i totally agree with comment #1. Miley Cyrus is a role model to many little girls, in cluding my six year old little sister. she was selling her self to a magizne that was mostly targeted for adult readers. As for Taylor he is playing a role in this movie, there is also a diffrence with a guy be shirtless thana girl being shirt less and she was a younger age. if you have a issue with a 17 year old guy being shirtless go to the beach and tell them to put on on. really there is a complete diffrence
I never saw anything wrong with Mileys pictures. Her picture had a hint of sexuality but I thought it was age appropriate. A persons sexual awakening starts around that age anyway. I feel the same way about Taylors shirtless pics. They are not too sexual and again I think age appropriate. The pictures themselves are not too sexual – Our dirty minds are percieving them that way.
